Government that in New York State recently a chicken thief received a sentence of life imprisonment. In Ont- ario the approved method of “lifting a coop†is for one of the gang to enter with an atomizer full of chloro- form and, after giving each bird a whiff, a man with a sack gathers them up. In scores of cases every bird in a chicken house is thus stolen. Col. Price would not comment upon ,the threat of farmers in the neighbor- hood of Tillsonburg that they will ‘shoot apprehended thieves on their Ifnrms with shot guns. “That is their look-out.†he said, in some cases but it must be shown that lguns are used in selfâ€"defence. The Government is keenly aware of the loss being occasioned by such mid- night marauders but as it is a matter Iof criminal law we cannot make pena- Ilties more stringent here. We can ionly act through the police and the icourts and this we are doing to best :of our ability.†There are still persons driving horse vehicles Without lanterns, al- though many have promptly obeyed the law. Do not run unnecessary risks. Fire recently destroyed the barn and contents. the property of James J. Trainor, lot 16, con. 12, King, near Bell's Lake. The fire was first notic- ed about 6 a.m. and before sufficient help had arrived it made such rapid progress that all efforts were useless. TWO horses, all grain and hay (around '70 tons) and all implements were lost. The estimated loss is placed at $10,000 and is only partly covered with insurance. “A menance to the whole commun- ity†were the words used by George Baxter, Sanitary Inspector for Scar- boro. in reference to a family of aliens father, mother and ten children living in the township and drawing relief. The father was recently prosecuted for neglecting to send the children to school, and the Inspector last week at a meeting of the Board of Health dis- cribed them as being infected with vermin and living on dry bread and vegetables. The home they live in is unfit for habitation and the family were given 14 days to get out. But penniless and destitute they have no place to go. Hon. Dr. King, Minister of Health saysâ€"Thousands of children were under-nourished, not by insufficiency of food, but by improper diet. Pre- pared pamphlets will be distributed to all the schools in the province on this subject. Walkerton police were called by Formosa villagers who had twice been disturbed by motorists turning powerful flashlights into their win- dows. Aylmer has been without a band for the past two years and the citiz- ens are now quite jubilant over the fact that one is to be organized again. If there is one organization that every town needs more than another it is the town band, and the town that has to do without one for a short period soon realizes this fact and appreciates the worth of the band to community lifeâ€"Acton Free Press. No less than 16 fishermen were noticed lined up on the Beaverton wharf one morning recently, some coming from as far afield as Orillia. The herring and Whitefish are said to be very plentiful this season. Orillia Agricultural Society spent 81646 for attractions at this year’s fair and paid only $715.00 in prizes to exhibitors. This does not seem a very fair proportion for a show the primary object of which is supposed to be encouragement of agricul- ture. Prevelance of chicken thieving by gangs apparently specially trained and highly organized is causing Attorney-General W. H. Price and Hon. J. S. Martin, Minister of Agri- culture, considerable alarm this fall. Mr. Martin recently suggested that another application be made to Otta- wa asking that the Criminal Code be amended to provide higher penal- ties. Such an application was made a year ago, but no action was taken. GENERAL NEWS AND V1 EWS Autumn’s Promise Down the leaves come slipping .sliding Twisting, twirling, glancing, gliding.
