Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mack of Cleveland, arrested for spooning in their own car, were awarded $3,675 damages by the common pleas court. Florence De Villier traveled from South Africa to Philadelphia to have removed a paper clip which had been in her lung for 12 years. GENERAL NEWS AND VIEWS A street sweeper found a package of gems worth $1,500 in a New York street, where it had lain unnoticed for four days, and restored it to its owner. Miss Lisbeth ApIer, who scratched her name and address on a comb she made in a German factory, will short. 1y wed Robert Press of New York, who later bought the comb and court- ed her by correspondence. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kopinsky of Grand Rapids, Mich., who lived toâ€" gether 41 years and Were divorced last February. were recently married again. ‘ Confidence that the Canadian cattle trade with the United Kingdom would be revived in spite of the recent diver- sion of Canadian cattle export to the United States, was expressed recently by Hon. W.R. Motherwell, Minister of Agriculture in the Federal Cabinet. George W. Wilson is again elected as reeve 0f Markham village, having received an acclamation, as did the members of the council and school board, in the village. Don’t call the fire department for that black smoke. It’s merely a Christmas cigar. The 40th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. George Teasdale was celebrated on Saturday evening, Dec. Slst, at their home on Wells Street, Aurora. A company of friends and relatives assembled. The whole fam- ily circle is complete and all were pre- sentâ€"Frank of Aurora, Miss Mary of Toronto General Hospital Nursing Staff, Miss Edith of Toronto, Edward of St. Catharines, George of Aurora. Guests were present from Toronto, Richmond Hill, Newmarket and other points. ' Probably the oldest voter in the County of York to mark a ballot on election day was Mrs. Wallace of Lemonville, mother of Mr. Mike Wall- ace. This lady is 95 years old, but despite her years, she was quite cap- able of marking her own ballot. A calf belonging to W.H. Kirken- dall, of Blue Mountain, Miss., was only 12 inches high and weighed only 15 pounds when three weeks old. Judge Elmer Kahl of Sydney, Neb., sentenced two men to jail for 60 days on bread and water for violating the prohibition law. A White Leghorn hen at the Nebr- aska Agricultural College poultry farm has laid 1,200 eeggs in less than nine years. The New York supreme court has ruled that when a man is sent to pris- on for life he is legally dead, and his wife can hold his property and marry again. As the congregation in the South Side church in Chicago was singing “Lead, Kindly Light,” all the lights went out, and candles were used to finish the service. When Leslie Makin and Miss Elsie Marshall of Liverpool, were arrainged for fighting on the street, the court sentenced them to be married at once. Miss Ethel Corley and James Elver- ton of Deal, Eng., eloped to marry, swimming 3 river to reach a minister’s home. Mrs. Jane Elvash of Glargow has been arrested for swindling a score of men after promising to marry them. \Vhen Pierre Legniere of Paris boasted that he had wives in 30 towns Mme. Leg'niere secured evidence that won her a divorce. Miss Rachel Cox-wen of Duluth, Minn._. was arrested for stealing from A. B. Chester and his bride of Skipton, Eng., are taking their honey- moon trip on horseback through York- shire. Marcus Richards of Evanston, 111., died as a result of overeating, making a meal of cheese only. Mrs. Emma McMahon, 106 years old, of Kansas City, M0., is a super- visor in a knitting mill, and helps to support her 70â€"yearâ€"old son, who she says “is to old and feeble to work." Before you get discouraged over minor misfortunes, think of what happened to Paul KotSy of Hammond, Ind. While working in a steel mill last June a hot steel rod pierced him under the jaw and came out through his temple, 22 feet of the rod being pulled through his skull. Last week he was discharged from the hospital, ‘ready to go to work again. How to name a Chinese baby in honor of Lindbergh and still retain the oriental touch in the youngster’s cognomen puzzled Mr. and Mrs. Lee Long, of Chicago's Chinatown. Fin- ally they hit on the name One Long Hop. Straining for a feature story, a London newspaper queried a number of celebrities past 50 years of age, asking whether they could bend over and touch their toes. Most of them couldn’t. When a reporter asked George Bernard Shaw over the tele- phone whether he could touch his toes the famed dramatist shouted: “Is that what you’ve called me up for? Well, God forgive you.” Pounding the keys of a typewriter would hardly be considered suitable training for a cowâ€"milking contest, a1~ though it might strengthen the fing- ers at that. Anyway, Miss Ruth Kis- sell, 18-yearâ€"old blonde stenographer of Ashland, won the dairymaid chamâ€" pionship of Ohio over 123 competitors, mostly country girls, by milking two quarts in one minute, receiving a prize cup containing $99 in gold. The knocker, the growler, the kicker, Fault-finders. large and small, What do they need For each day’s deed? No brains, no sense,+â€"just gall. When you hark to the voice of the knocker, As you list to his hammer fall, Remember the fact That the knocking act Requires no brains at; all. When you list to the growl of the growler, As you hark to his ceasless growl, You will please recall .That a dog is all It takes for an endless howl. 'As you watch for the kick of the kicker. As you notice his strenuous kick, You’ll observe the rule I have no trees before my house ‘L To cast their pleasant shade, About my windows never twine ‘ The blossoms God has made, But there are roses, sweeter far, ‘ That on the pavements bloomâ€" The children of the city streets, That a stubborn mule Is great at the same old trick Whose laughter lights my room. No hedges like a honeyed wall Adorn my dwelling place. No fountains weave upon my lawn A web of twinkling lace, For me no robins greet the sun, A fan of rainbow gleams, But children play before my house, Who keep me young with dreams. [What lonelines the streets would know If children were not here! Their joyous voices bring a smile 0r wing away a tear The country house is rich, indeed, With blossom. bird and tree, But happy children at my door Are wealth enough for me!
