Drury, former Premier ‘of Ontario, under the Farmer Gov- ‘enment, delight his hearers when in Calgary recently, with his broad out- look in regard to Canadianism. He said that if Canada is to attain the nationhood, worthy of her resources and her people, she must achieve a deeper unity based on justice, sym- pathy and tolerance amongst all parts of her varying population. It is im- possible to build a nation if various sections mistrusted each other; if lab- or was pitted against capital, or town against country . At a meeting of the directors of the Aurora Agricultural Society, Mr. A. M. Kirkwood was appointed Treasur-' er, and Mr. G.W. Baldwin, Secretary. ' It was decided to hold the annual Show on Saturday, June 2nd. A horse 1 shoe pitching contest will be one of the new features this year. j Observing a fifty-year custom by titled ladies, whose husbands play important roles in the government of the country, of holding lavish recep- tions on the eve of the opening of the British p'arliament, the Marchioness of Londonderry, LEFT, at her palatial Park Lane residence received “every- body Who is anybody” in the Conservative party. The Tories being in office representatives of foreign countries in glittering uniforms attended the fun- ction, which was the most brilliant since the war. In contrast to this magnificence, at humble Victoria. Hall, Bloomsbury, Miss Isabel MacDonald, RIGHT, daughter of the former premier, received a number of Labor mem- bers of parliament and friends. Chamlpag'ne was replaced at this reception by ale and Scotch and soda, while the‘60-cent cigars of the Londonerry event were supplanted by the democratic pipe. All men are born free and equal but many of them marry.â€"â€"Kitchener Re- cord. Permanent peace would be nearer if the League of Nations or some. other international authority could muzzle the people who talk of ‘the next war.’ istration has not. Forty years ago the youngsters carried a book'to and fro while in the proximity to the seat on which they sat was a slate on which they did their figuring and wrote their exercises. Slates used by the girls had red felt edges secured by black cord; the boys preferred the plain wooden frame. The girls used a sponge to clean their slates; not so the boys, as their coat or shirt sleeves and pant legs readily testified. Mayor J.M. Walton, Mrs. Walton, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Sloan, left on Friday last for a motor trip to the Southern States. Let the beautiful snow get as deep as it wants to. It, will have a hard job touching the hem of the ladies’ skirts. By the time it becomes possible to fly over to England in a few hours people will discover that: it was the leisurely days of the ocean voyage that they valued most of all. No provision for old-age pensions, it is understood, will be made by the Ontario Government this year. We commend our readers’ attention to the health talks from the Canadian Medical Association which are appear- ing in another part of this paper each week. We cannot learn too much a- long this line. Those people who doubt that the world is getting better should com- pare the valentines of 1927 with those of twenty years ago. They show a marked improvement and would indi- cate that we are becoming more civi- ized. GENERAL NEWS AND VIEWS 1 Gilbert D. We remember him when he was only a premier or something down in On- tario. An Ontario man predicts the wea- ther for a whole year in advance, and sometimes he is right. His forecasts attract a good deal of attentionâ€"ex- cept from the weather, which goes on regardless.
