THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 1928 She thought it would be too expensive The old lady had never , spoken over a long distance 1‘ line before â€" but she was so hungry for the sound of her daughter’s voice! The operator was kind and helpful and in a moment the beloved voice was sound- ing in her ear. And when the telephone bill came she feund the call had cost only 45 cents. Now the Sunday evening talk is a regular thing. More -â€"- it now costs only '25 cents. Instead of asking for her daughter by name, mother gives “Long Dis- tance†the distant number â€"â€" hence the charge (after 8.80) is only 25 cents. Shop in Winterton’s Old Stand this Successful Field East Vaughan, Ratepayers Associ- ation “went over the top†in staging 'the first annual Field Day at Richvale last Saturday afternoon. The atten- dance was large and the financial re- sults were very gratifying to the enâ€" ergetic members of the committee who have worked hard during the past few weeks in preparation for the ev- ent. The unqualified success of the (lay ensures that the event will be an annual one and already the aim has been set to make the 1929 Field Day bigger and better than ever. Despite .other attractions, about five hundred people gathered during the afternoon and evening, and enjoyed to the full the program of sports, games and in the evening the concert which was held in the community church. The proceeds of the day will be the com- menceinent of a fund for the building of a Community Hall in which en- deavour The Liberal wishes the spon- sors every success. Reeve George Kellam and Councillor William John- son Were welcome visitors on the grounds during the day. Refresh- ment booths did a rushing business and midway attractions had their cus- tomary charm and were well patron- ized. An exciting softball game be- tween the MacGregors and the Glen Stewarts of Toronto resulted in a 10- 9 victory for the latter team. The races for kiddies and Morn-ups were hotly contested and entered into with keen enthusiasm. The winners were, Baby’s race. R. Sparkes; girls 7 and under, H. Hustis, D. Montgomery, M. ONTARIO Day Held By East Vaughan Association .one of the well known Dundas Sisters, famous tap dancers. singing under the leadership of Mr. Allen was much enjoyed. Councillor Wm. J. Johnson, donated a handsome cash prize for the longest married couple on the grounds and this was won by Mr. and Mrs. Farr- ants. During the evenings program Reeve George Kellam drew the number from lthe box in the lucky number contest. The one drawn was number three and .lhe winner of the bag of sugar is g‘Frank F. Macphail, of Toronto. ’(In a few well chosen marks Reeve Kellam complimented the association on tl'u success of the day and commended the fine commun- 'ity spirit which prompted the organâ€" ization in its endeavours. At the conclusion of the program, President J. Wark on behalf of the >association thanked all those who had contributed to the success of the day and all who had taken part in the iprogram. He was well pleased with [the success of the first annual field day and he hoped it would be an ann- iial event. BAND API’RECIATED A pleasing feature of the excellent ,entertainment offered was the music- ' ial programme by the Elgin Mills con- cert band under Mr. P.A. Drury. Dur- ing the afternoon and early evening the band provided a generous musical programme of diversified character. The numbers included the ever popul- ar marches Colonel Bogey by- Alford and Doge’s march 'from the Merchant of Venice. Band arrangements of Slumberland Waltz and Hope Eternal with other compositions of Zamecnik made a pleasing contrast to the more stirring March Theme from Monsieur Beaucaire. Possibly one of the simp- lest and yet most acceptable number rendered by the band was the Chant de Voyagers also from the well known Iknown Monsieur Beaucaire. ! The fact that this talented organiz- ation gave its services gratuitously to the program committee of the Rate- payer’s Association is but a sample of the fine spirit possessed by the band which is spread popularity. has been organized but a short time, under the skilled leadership of Mr. Drury, it was piloted into the prize- iwinning class at the Canadian Nation- Ial Exhibition last year. and at the present time underathe same capable leader is being groomed for higher honours in its class at the C.N.E. on lAugust 30 this year. i ; Elgin Mills and vicinity may well ‘be proud of a group of musicians who lcan, without municipal aid, successâ€" fully compete with bands from much larger centres where they are backed by municipal “support.†For it is to be remembered that Elgin Mills Con- cert band is financially dependent on its own rcsourccs‘and the generosity of its friends.
