The only man who really neéds to know a little about everything is a buyer for a drug store. People who kill a town: â€"â€" Those who oppose improvements. Those who run it down to strangers. Those who distrust public-spirited men. Those who show no hospitality to anyone. Those who hate to see oth- es make money. Those who oppose every improvement that doesn’t origi- nate with themselves. Those who put on an extra long face when a stranger talks of locating in their town. Those who oppose every pub- lic enterprise that does not appear of personal benefit to themselves. A general clean up after the falling of the leaves makes the town and your own premises tidy for the fall and spring. The hunters of the section are busy planning their fall outing in the woods. Strangeâ€"while the waters of lake Simcoe shall a fall of nearly two feet from that of high Water, lake Superi- or is almost three feet higher than previous years at this time. The price for turnips now prevail- ing, around 12 cents a bushel, does not make this crop a particularly good paying proposition this year. The yield, however, is heavy. Mr. Geo. Freeman of the Markham- Scarboro townline, whose Jersey herd has just undergone a tuberculosis test reports a clean sheet. A resolution was moved at the reg- ular meeting of Newmarket Council to urge the citizens to do all in their power to patronize the passengers and freight on the Radial and not the trucks. It was deemed wise to have representatives of the T. T. C. to con- sult with the Council and to come to some satisfactory agreement. The Stouffville Women’s Liberal Association were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Bruce at their home, on Tuesday evening, October 9th. The many ladies present enjoyed the pro- gram given by the Melville members also the inspiring talk on Liberalism given by Mr. Bruce. All enjoyed the usual social hour. Three dozen bottles of wine were seized by county police during a day- light raid at Aurora and Harry Ridge- way was taken into custody charged with B.L.C.A. He was released on cash bail of $500 by Mayor Walton, J.P.. of Aurora, pending further investigation. A coincidence that is a record, no doubt, is that of the teaching staff at Kimberley Public School. Mr. Carl Carruthers is the principal and his mother is teacher in the other room, and both are capable teachers. A cow which sold at an auction sale near Stouffville last spring for $70, sold again last week with calf at side under the auctioneer’s hammer for $152. Good dairy cattle are steadin climbing in price. His truck bursting into flames as he was driving south on Yonge Street, John Callicott, of 66 Givens St., Tor- onto, was forced to jump to safety from the burning vehicle last Thurs- day. The blaze broke out without warning and the driver only had time to apply the brakes and turn the truck towards the ditch. The North York Township fire brigade was call- ed and extinguished the flames. The damage is reported to be in the neigh- borhood of $2,000. Well drilling operations started last Thursday on the town water Works property at the Wm. Ratcliff farm, two miles north of Stouffville and by Saturday night a. quiet flow was struck at only 25 feet below the surface, through a six inch pipe. I In Korea unmarried males are not permitted to tie up their hair or to wear hats. Persian bread is useful not only as a food but also as a protection against rain. Arrested for wrong parking, a chauffeur in Omaha kidded and laughed at the policeman and later in- sulted the judge, who gave him 90 days. The culprit laughed some more finally saying: “I’m driving for the warden of the penitentiary; I’m in for life.” Charles Tunney, of Newmarket, was arrested early Sunday morning by Police Sergeant Tom Kirk on a seri- ous charge. We have just read an account of a man in the Trochu district, who used a two cent stamp that had already done service. This cost him $30 and We venture the statement that this a- mount would pay for all the letters the gentleman in question would write in his natural life. Travelling south on Yonge Street near Aurora. a car driven by H. W. Dunoon, of Newmarket, collided with a light coupe on Sunday afternoon. The drivers of both cars escaped with- out injury, but the two vehicles were badly smashed up. Discarded auto truck tires, melted, are being used to make rubber roads in England.
