The beauty parlor operators, say more and more “dainty” men are patâ€" ronizing beauty 'parlors -for ‘facials,” marcels and other treatments. Well, why not? Did not the woman invade the barber shops for hair cuts? “What’s sauce for the gander is also sauce for the goose,” to use a time worn expression backwards. Newmarket citizens are planning to hold a demonstration on Dominion Day. July 151;. When Toronto was a village with but one brick house, an ancestor' of President Herbert Hoover settled on Yonge Street and helped to found the anker settlement which still exists near Newmarket. The chicken thieving epidemic which was rampant throughout York County last year threatens to break out again. Although the season is still young some bad thefts have been “reported, and are indignant at the manner in which these despicable raids are carried out and there is a persistent demand that the penalty for the offence include the lashes. During the past week thieves visited the pens on the farm of Robert Hope, living north of Stouffville, and made a successful get-away with 125 birds, ‘while Joseph Alsop, over on the Ux- bridgeâ€"Pickering townline, suffered a similar loss when over 200 birds were stolen. Within a month more than 500 ' birds have been stolen in this manner, for thieves visited the sectâ€" ion of Whitchurch, adjoining Stouff- ‘ville, and made two successful hauls ‘in April. In one of the April raids ithe farmer’s dog was very sick the next day, indicating that the animal had been doped in some manner. A similar thing happened when Alsop’s farm was visited for he owns a valuâ€" able police dog, and cannot explain how the thieves got onto the ‘farm without the dog giving the alarm. Big men and big industries are looking to the smaller towns as they have never looked before. In a re- cent issue of the American Magazine, Henry Ford said: “Is it sufficient for business to pay high land prices and high taxes in congested cities where its workers must, pay exorbitant rents? By moving out business could get lower land prices, lower taxes and lower rentsâ€"and far better living conditions for its people.” The funeral of Thos. Cairns, of Lasâ€" ky, took place on Friday. May 10th. The attendance was one of' the largest in the history of the community. Mr. Cairns was in his 92nd year. He was born on the farm on which he died. His parents came from Scotland a- bout 1835, and were among the first settlers in the Lasky district. His wife predeceased him many years ago, and he is survived by two sons 'and five daughters.
