T1902! gbtfully NORTH TORONTO DUK'ANT THE I mPVOWBd The Financial Times says: “‘Not is less safe, Macaulay’s statement the funds of an insurance company in ordinary stocks and shares would have been regarded with disfavoi‘, but the practice is gaining steadily in popularity. The investment of the funds of such a gigantic business as that of the Sun Life of Canada would be greatly hampered if such avenues were not open, for many of the strongest companies in the Dominion are rapidly redeeming their prior charges and diminishing what is still regarded as the more orthodox field of investment. The rapid development of the Sun Life is due very largely to this ability to pursue a broad invest- ment policy. With regard to the safety factor, we must content our- selves with the statement of Macaulay that a shrinkage of £20,000,000 would leave intact an undivided surplus of £11,000,000.â€â€"(Adv.) Macaulay’s exposition of the Sun Life of Canada‘s Investment pol- icy will have a direct appeal here. He ascribes the company’s success and continued growth to four factorsâ€" cautious and economical agency man- agement, careful selection of risks, building up of protective reserves out of earnings, and specialization in safe and profitable investment of its funds. When one comes to dealing with sums like a hundred million pounds, and when a. difference of one per cent. in average yield means a difference of a Million pounds a year, it is clear that within the limits of safety the reward to all concerned is too great to be sac- rificcd to a policy of routine. If a "policy of routine is safer than one of vigilant selection, there would be something to say for letting the difference in average yield go, but ex- perience has proved that on balanCe, and as regards capital values, routine is less safe.
