Premier Ferguson is credited with a desire to “spring†the election on the people. With his customary confidence he says he will have the election when he sees fit. Elections sprung for political advantage are not popular with the people. Political conventions are the order of the day throughout Ontario. A number have been held during recent weeks and all parties appear to be repairing their fences in preparation for an election this fall. ’ Work commenced this week on the new building of Marmill Limited at Markham. The firm was formerly known as D. N. Reesor and Son. Richmond Hill Fire Brigade an- swered a call during the bad storm on Saturday afternoon to the home of Mr. Bailey, of Vaughan Township, just south of town when his barn was struck by lightning. The services of the boys of the Fire Brigade who answer the call of duty in the face of all dangers and weath- er conditions should be more general- ly appreciated. They render a real service to the community. Then again it may be only a price cutting war. Maybe it is feared one of the Ferguson Chain Stores may start up and take the business from the independent operator. ' Sergeant T. Kirk, of Newmarket, made a raid in Marsh district over the week-end and a large quantity- of “Mash†was found. Charges will be laid. It is reported that there is internal strife among the “moonshiners†in Holland Landing district. It may develop into a “Tong War.†The frequent rains of the past weeks have been a great help to the root crops and they are reported to be looking exceptionally well. The earthquake which was recorded about seven o‘clock on Monday morn- ing was felt quite noticeably in Richâ€" mond Hill and surrounding district. The old idea that it takes a small army to do the annual threshing has been exploded by the purchase of threshing outfits by the farmers. One Markham township farmer told The Liberal that he threshes right from the field and that he operates the complete outfit with six men. Crop conditions throughout York County continue to look promising. Those who have threshed report a good yield and a good sample of grain. With good prices prevailing this should be a profitable year for the farmers. A large number of York County farmers have purchased threshing outfits. It is surprising on a drive through the country how many farm- ers are thus equipped. Opens August 26th in our 12 Toronto Schools. Hoiles was killed on Sunday morning. It is believed that these were the severest storms that had ever visited this sec~ tion, a great deal of damage being done. Miss Amy Brooks, of Mount Albert has been engaged as teacher of Hope School. Rev. H. D. Cameron, of Oakville, occupied the pulpit of St. Andrew’s Church on Sunday. During the storm on Saturday, Mr. E. Hadwin’s barn was struck by light- ning, and with its contents of wheat, hay and several implements was de- stroyed. By the efforts of the Mapâ€" le Fire Brigade and the neighbours the house and other buildings were saved. The loss is partly covered by insurance. While walking north on the Yonge Street highway near Richmond Hill, Saturday evening, Newton Athow, of Oxford St., Elgin Mills, was struck down by Andrew Clarke, of 43 Ding- wall Avenue, and seriously injured. Athow was picked up suffering from a fractured skull and a broken leg, Picked up by Clarke, he was taken to the home of Dr. J, P. Wilson, at Rich- mond ’Hill and following first aid treatment he was taken to the Toron- to General hospital, where he is pro- gressing favorably. Due to the hea- vy mist, the mishap was considered purely accidental and Clarke was not held. The accident emphasizes the need of sidewalks on Yonge Street. Fate was kind to J. B. Ryan, of 2824 Dundas street west, Toronto, when he emerged uninjured after his car had skidded 64 feet and turned over twice on the highway about a mile and a half north of Aurora last Friday night. Ryan is said to haVe been travelling south in a large road- ster at a very high rate of speed when another car turned out on the high- ‘way from an intersection. ntc There are few cheaper ways of substantially increasing the value of the farm than by planting a row of hard or sugar maples along the front of the farm and on both sides of the lane. The Provincial Department of Agriculture will supply you with these trees free of cost, and you will have only the carriage to pay. They send them in April, but it is advisable to write to the department of Forestry at Toronto and get your order in now. Send in your news items to The Liberal. There are now five vacancies in *the Senate and when these are filled there will be a government majority in the Upper House for the first time in many years. - Farmers in the district say that late crops look exceptionally well. “The barley I sowed on June 6th is the best crop I have†said one Markham town- ship resident.
