Love of children and a desire to do the most for them do not take the place of knowledge. We would not think of entrusting the operation of a machine or the erection of a building or bridge to a man who was merely anxious to run the machine or to build something We place such duties in the hands of It is accepted in all civilized count- ries that every child should be given a chance to develop the physical and mental capacities with which he is born. Some children start out in life with a considerable handicap. If they are born into a poor family, food may be scarce or of questionable qual- ity, the home may lack sanitary'com veniences, there may be overcrowding lack of play-space, and many other additional disadvantages. The chil- dren born into a wealthy home may be equally, unfortunate, because we often find in the homes of the well-to do, children who are not living heal- thy lives. This is chiefly the fault of the parents who spoil the child. GI'VE ALL THE CHILDREN A ~ CHANCE RICHMOND HILL DAIRY FJ. MANSBRIDGE J. W. Parent Education is a real need; it is not a fad but an evidence of the importance of proper preparation in order to ensure that all children shall be given their chance. a person who has been trained to do the particular type of work. Parents do not know by instinct the proper way in which to bring up a child. Some of them do gain know- ledge from experience, and some of them are willing and anxious to learn from others. The up-bringing of a child is a serious and, sometimes, a difficult matter. If it is to be done properly it requires training and pre- paration for the task. To the pers- on who feel that our ancestors got a- long very well and reared families without training we can only say that the number of unhappy individuals, the number who have never adjusted themselves to life, the many who find life a burden, the group who are a nuisance to others, to say nothing of the few who have remental and phy- sical health, are ample proof that the old sfstem was not a success. You’ve had a tough break, Old Man, and don’t be afraid to come here and ’get what you want.” Charity? No! Just the storekeeper’s community spirit asserting itself. He knows that you have always lived in the community and that your honesty is estab- lished. Mingled with his community spirit is a certain amount of pride in brotherly love. He knows you bet- ter than you know him. Do not wait for misfortune to find out how much confidence your merchant has in you. Do it now. Give him your trade and you will both profit thereby. The wheel of misfortune sometimes turns against us and we meet with reverses. At these times every- thing goes wrong. One affliction follows another and we are down and out. Probably sickness is the cause. At any rate dark clouds obscure the horizon of ,the fut- ure. However, no matter how dark the days are, our- selves and our famfilies need clothing and food to keep body and soul together. Who comes to your aid in those dismal periods and supplies your wants until suc- cess again shines? The merchant in the city outside Richmond Hill knows little about your circumstances and cares less, although it may have been him who re- ceived your support a few months ago. He will not come to your assistance now and tide you over the rough waters of misfortune. No, it is the merchant who probably lives on your own street who will come to your aid.
