AD. 0178 A number of store and house burg- laries have been reported in Beaver- ton. The Rouge bridge on the 8th coh- cession of Markham, just south of the Wideman Mennonite church, is still sinking as a result of the bad storm last spring which washed away a great quantity of the dirt about the abutment on the south-west corner. Nova Scotia is having a plebiscite on the liquor issue on Thursday, Octo- ber 31st. Mr. Ferguson has so set the election date in Ontario that the dry verdict expected there will have no effect on his own chances of re- election here. On Sunday, September 15th the ninety-fourth anniversary services were observed at Temperanceville United Church. A giant cornstalk grown by Lloyd Watson, measuring fourteen feet four inches occupies a prominent position lashed to a telephone pole on main str‘eet, Woodbridge, opposite H. N. Smith’s clothing store. It is but one of many taken from the field where it grew. ‘ ' We venture that one of Mr. Fergu- son’s fondest wishes at the moment is that the present election should be featured by numerous three cornered contests. The one sure way to guarantee the return of the Ferguson Government is for those in opposition to ‘split their forces. The village council of Sutton have authorized a by-law to borrow $50,â€" 000 for the construction of a new Continuation school, as requested by the school board of the village. The town of Kingsville has beeni assessed the sum of $2000 due to the ( fact that a woman of that town died l of typhoid fever contracted through drinking contaminated water. The onus for pure water is thus placed on | the municipality for supplying the' right kind of water for the citizens. I The Trench Block on Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, has been brightened this week with an attractive coat of paint. The b'rick work has all been painted a light cream and the store fronts are trimmed in a rich mahogâ€" any bolor. It is a notable improve- ment to Richmond Hill’s main street. CHICKEN THIEVEING IS RE- PORTED AMONG YORK COUNTY FARMERS AND IT IS A WISE POLICY TO KEEP A GOOD DOG ABOUT THE PREMISES. Lock the hen house securely before, not af- ter the chickens are gone. Several frosts were reported throughout the district last week. The Conservative convention for the riding of East York will be held at the R. H. MacGregor Sch001 on Saturday, September 28th and it is a foregone conclusion that Hon. G. S. Henry will be named the candidate. Clifford CaseI of Aurora, is men- tioned as the likely candidate in the provincial riding Qf North York, in the Conservative interests. P. W. Pear- son, Liberal, who represented thé rid- ing in the last legislature will probab- ly again be a candidate and is assur- ed of strong support for re-election. Goslett's hardware store in New- market was broken into by thieves last week and some money and a quantity of amunition was stolen. The electors are wondering why Mr Ferguson fixed the date of the elec- tion~as October 30th, just one day be- fore the annual returns of the Liquor Control Board are due. Can 'it be that the proportions of the liquor bus- iness for last year would be such a shock to the people that he is afraid of the result? On Friday, September 13th, David Watson, of Goodwood, held a sale of dairy cattle which realized $3347. The top price for a cow was $160. The removal of the old board fence at the park has been much appreciat- ed. Now for a little beautification of the park itself and the removal of the unsightly lock-up form the main entrance. A news item mentions the case of a New York man who started life as an errand boy and has now been made editor. This just shows the danger of starting life as an errand boy. Miss Jennie Ashmore spent last week with Misses Dorothy and Ruth Bowen. Next Sunday, September 29th is Rally Day in the Sunday Schools of Ontario. The special Rally service will be observed in our school at 2 o’clock (standard time.) A provincial election is likely in New Brunswick on October 313t.
