AD. 0178 Toronto At the service in the United Church on Su‘hday the congregation enjoyed a fine address on “Thanksgiving†from our pastor. The choir also rendered appropriate selections for the day, which an unusually large congre- gation appreciated very much. The boys and girls of the third and fourth class, No. 7, Markham, visited the two senior rooms of Stouffville school on Friday afternoon. After a pleasant motor trip the pupils tried out their skill in spelling, rapid calcu- ilation and mechanical arithmetic. The 3visiting school was defeated by both rooms in spelling in the rapid calculat- ion however, they had an easy vic- tory. The third classes from Gonn- ley met defeat in mechanical arithme- tic 'in Miss'Orchard’s room While in fourth classes victory was claimed by number seven. Stouffville may well be proud of the good work done by their teachers as the pupils in third ’class had an average of about 985? in spelling, those in fourth class an averâ€" age of about 95%. Our boys and girls had over 900} in each of three classes, in spelling, so they feel al- though defeated that they did credit- able work. Three girls from here had no errorsâ€"Blanche Henderson, {Marion Heise and Helen Winger. At A rather unique address was 'given at the close of church school session, entitled “The Preacher,†by Mr. Jose- ph Brown. Mr. Brown mentioned different lines of criticism levelled at the clergy in general and urged his listeners to be more considerate, more helpful, more constructive, more Christian and more appï¬eciative to- ward their leaders. “You need not be alarmed that any words of commend ation you have to offer wiIl give them an exalted opinion of themselves if they do not receive more praise than do teachers and tax collectors", said Mr. Brown. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McCague.and Miss Myrtle, of Toronto, spent’ Tues- day with Mrs. L. L. Nichols. Mrs. C. Kaiser and Miss LyIa Kais- er accompanied by Miss Velma Robin- son, of Toronto, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Herbert L. Kaiser.~ Mrs. Homer Burke and Miss Verna of Port Union, are spending the week with Mrs. Wilmot Brumwell. Miss Dorothy Wrangle, of Toronto, spent the holiday with Miss Margaret Avison. Mrs. William Goodyear, of Brown’s Corners, spent the week-end with Mrs. Harry Karelle. Mrs. Mayden, and Mrs. Trembly, of Hamilton, spent Sunday with Miss Ethel Mortson. Mr. John Farquharson ships to Caulifields Dairy from four to eight cans of milk daily at about $2.45 per can. As is customary with all the dairies, October’s milk is not settled for until about the middle of the foll- owing month. Mr. Farquharson gets one can of buttermilk daily from the dairy worth 25¢ per can. Up to the present he has settled monthly for the refuse when he gets his money for his whole milk. Now the dairy notified him that henceforth he must pay daily for his buttermilk. We agree with Mr. Farquharson that it is a very poor rule that won’t work both ways. Isn’t this poor business etiquette from a city firm? Mr. and Mrs. Redman, of Brighton and Mrs. Nattress, Peoria, 111., and Miss Myrtle Watson, of Goodwood, were visitors last week with Mrs. W. F. Nichols. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Jennings, Miss Margaret Jennings, of Toronto, were guests of Mrs. R. F. Klinck on Sunday. ‘ Miss Marion Klinck, of Stouffville, spent Sunday under the parental roof. The J.W.I. had a very successful meeting on Saturday, when Mrs. R. L. Stiver, of Unionville, addressed a large gathering of Women and girls on “A Woman’s Possessions.â€_ Foll- owing the address was a very instruc~ tive demonstration of table manners. Four of the members were served a full course meal by the maid Miss Milâ€" licent Klinck. Those who sat down to the table were: Mrs. Hostess, Mrs. Good Manners, Mrs. Ill-at»ease and ‘Mrs. Bad Manners. At the close a dainty lunch was served by the host- ‘esses, Miss Millicent Klinck and Mrs. H. F. Collard. VICTORIA SQUARE NEWSY NOTES ndir lle The ZiiflhmmL thinln‘ and lle Spelling .. 94 2-3 Ra.
