VOL. LII. ENOWP LAYING ll Feb; 6, 7 An uneventful meeting of the Mark- ham township council was held at the township hall, Unionville on Monday afternoon. Reeve Gohn presided and all the members were present. With Deputy-Reeve R. L. Stiver opâ€"l posed council increased the salary of. road superintendent, W. G. Maxwell to $125. per month. His previous salary was $100. per month. Deputy Reeve Stiver said that the council had called for applications for the position c‘nly last year when a number of appli- cations were received. He thought it was too early to start boosting the salary. He would favor Mr. Maxwell carrying on at the same rate for this year and if the council thought he gave good satisfaction they could give him a bonus at the end of the year. Mr. Stiver said he had no particular fault to find with the superintendent, but. that there had been a lot of critic- ism of the superintendent attending plowing matches last fall. ‘ .. It is expected several from this district Willattend the con- ;ference to_morrow. Several interviewed are still of the opinion that Hon. G. S. Henry will in- tervene in the negotiations and cancel the permit for the operation of busses on Yonge Street issued by his departâ€" ment a year ago. It is pointed out that the busses are not only being forced on the people against their ex- pressed wishes but that. they are a menace to public safety in the crowd- ed and already congested traffic on X onge Street HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The regular February meeting of the Horticultural Society will be held on Tuesday evening, February 11th at S o’clock in the school room of the United Church.
