The town of Barrie is seriously considering an increased tax on dogs, especially large dogs, or else the pass- ing of a by-law prohibiting the runn- ing at large of dogs during certain months. Inspector A. L. Campbell presented the report of the public schools in the county, at the County Council last week. At present there are 199 pub- lic schools employing 910 teachers, composed of 164 males and 746 fe- males. No teachers have a third- class certificate, while 172 have first- class, 725 second-class and 13 special kindergarten. There are 41,270 pupâ€" ils attending the schools, with classes divided as follows: Primary 21 1-2 per cent., first class 15 per cent, second class 18 per cent., third class 23 per cent, and fourth class 22 1-2 per cent. Z Sixteen public spirited citizens of Stoufl'ville acted as a guarantee to se- cure for that town a four‘day Chatâ€" auqua. The proceeds were $150. short of the required amount and the said sixteen public spirited citizens had to dig down in their Jeens for the deficit. That’s a good test of public spirit. Simcoe County Council recbmmends to the municipalities the granting of a reward of $10. for killing of dog or dogs in the act of worrying sheep. The annual loss due to sheep killed by dogs is a large amount. Not only does it represent a large loss but it is also a hindrance to the sheep breed- ing industry. Don’t_overlook the opportunity to win five dollars cash prize by sending in a suggestion how to improve the Richmond Hill annual Spring Fair which will be held on May 24th. One week was the duration of the January session of the Ontario Counâ€" ty Council this year. That would be a good example for the York Coun- ty Council whose January session stretched into February and lasted three weeks. .Reeve A. H. McKenzie, of Wood- bridge, and Reeve W. Holborn, Sutton presented a by-law requesting the leg- islative committee of the County Council to interview the Provincial Government, asking it to grant villâ€" ages and small m'unicipalities the right to license peddlers and hawkers. A Scotchman wrote to eleven tail- ors asking for their pattern books. He now has a beautiful new rag rug. Another one somewhat similar for Hon. G. S.
