'AD. 0178 RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, JULY 3rd, 1930 ‘ Dr. and Mrs. F. Routley have gone to their summer cottage in Muskoka for a couple of months. . Hear Hon. Peter Heenan, Minister of Labor, and W. P. Mulock, candidate in North York at Richmond Hill, Sat- Mr. Charlie Robeson who has taken over the baking business of Mr. Step- hens in Lyn, near Gananoque met with a painful accident just as he was starting to work the first day. He slipped and his hand was caught in the mixer causing serious injuries to the fingers. He was treated at the ‘Hospital and it is hoped he will soon be able to resume work. Mrs. Burgess, of Collingwood, is spending a few weeks with her daugh- ter Mrs. T. F. Jackson. Saturday was an ideal day for Field Day Sports, and a large crowd was present, and much interest was taken in the games and contests. Peter Heenan mined coal in the pits of Cumberland, England; he has railroaded in Central America, and in Canada. This country has been his home for 28 years, and whether as a1â€" derman of Kenora, Ont, chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engi- neers, or minister of the crown, his chief interest is that of Labour. The Ontario Legislature was his first polit- ical stamping-ground, but in 1925 he arrived in Ottawa and a year later There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Women’s Inâ€" stitute on Wednesday of last week. The speaker was Mrs. Laura Rose Stephen, of Ottawa, who gave an inte-Z resting address. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies. Fortyâ€"three candidates wrote at the Entrance examination here last week. Mr. Shore, of Woodbridge was presid- ing examiner. Mr. Percy Arnott, Mr. L. and Miss Gwynneth Arnott, visited over Sunâ€" day with friends in the village. Neither political achievement nor material success has turned his head: Peter is never “upstage,” never anyâ€" thing but the robust champion of the working-man, with a voice in the ord- ering of affairs that carries no small weight. He never had a college edu- cation or a professional training; and he is not ashamed to confess it. Only a few weeks ago, with great restraint and quiet dignity, he reminded the Conservatives in the House of Com- mons of this fact. He had been born under a thatched roof in Ireland, but in that humble abode he had been taught good manners and courtesy which, he said, some of his opponents seemed to lack. The reference was to the deplorably bad taste of the Conservatives in interjecting sneering and jeering interruptions ceaselessly during a two and a half hour speech which Peter was delivering on unem- ployment. Hislshot sank home. Mrs. S. R. Robinson, Miss Ruth Rob- inson and Mr. Stanley Pipher bf Mark- ham,‘ spent Sunday at the home of Mr. A. C. Robinson. The annual picnic of the Sabbath School of the United Church will be held at Elm Park, Woodbridge on Sat- urday, July 19th. Mr. George Byam, of Toronto, visit- ed over Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Keys. Over 160 labor disputes smoothed over, disastrous strikes averted, years of respite from industrial unrest gen- erally and millions of dollars saved to the working-man, sodial legislation of the most advanced character written into the Statute Booksâ€"so reads the record of the Hon. Peter Heenan, min- ister of Labour. Ex-coal-minerand locomotive engineer, now become a member of the Privy Council of His Majesty’s Government in Canada, this Warmâ€"hearted Irishâ€"Canadian is simpâ€" ly “Peter,” to all castes and classes. He counts his friends by the thousands all the way from Sydney, C.B., N.S. to Victoria B.C. HON. PETER HEENAN Maple 3 letters From Tie PeOpIe was installed as Minister of Labour in the Liberal Government. Peter allowed no grass to grow under his feet, and Mr. Mackenzie King was not long in appreciating his native ability and broad sympathies. We, on the other hand, desire that our returned boys should not be placed in any prejudiced position. We want them to feel that they are respected and honourable citizens for whom Can- ada is willing to go the limit in re- ‘memberance, rather than to feel ob- jects of charity as his article suggests. If one were to ask him what he con- sidered his most lasting achievement, outside of. the 170 industrial disputes in which his intervention has brought about peace, he would, perhaps, point to Old Age Pensions. The comfort that he has brought into the lives of the aged citizens of Canada is incap- able of assessment; it is a simple fact that the proud and worthy independ- ence which many thousands of our old people now enjoy is attributable in very large measure to the generous, warm-hearted and human qualities of Peter Heenan. ‘ My attention has been directed to an editorial in the Express Herald of June 26th, entitled “Only 14 Veter- ans.” So far as Messrs. Trench, Naughton and myself are concerned we have had no connection in any way ‘whatsoever with the appointment of the Registrars for North York. These appointments were made without any interference by the Party of which we have the honour to be the chief officers Manifestly the editorial is an attempt to catch the soldiers vote by an unfair appeal to sentiment. The editor of the Express Herald has no argument to offset the claim that the Govern- ment has dealt» generously in a. non- partisan spirit with the returned boys and their dependents. Therefore he does not hesitate to drag the soldiers into the mire of party politics. HON. PETER HEENAN ' Minister of Labor for Canada who will address a public meeting in the Masonic Hall, Richmond Hill, Satur- day afternoon. W. P. Mulock the candidate in North York will also speak. SHIELDSâ€"In loving memory of our darling son and brother John Robert (Jackie) who passed away one year ago June 28, 1929. Jackie darling how we miss you, No one knows the bitter pain; We have suffered since we lost you ‘ Life has never been the same. The years may wipe out many things But this they will wipe out never The memory of those happy days, ‘ When we were all together. I Safe in the arms of Jesus 3; Sadly missed by Mother, Daddy, Brother and Sister So far as his unfair personal attack on me and my associates is concerned it is beneath contempt. I am sur- prised that he has so little regard for the the feelings of fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers as to open afresh the wounds that have barely healed. Pres.
