AD 0178 The account was for water service {since August 25th, 1925. The total reading of the meter was 3,093,400 gallons. 61,700 gallons @ 35 cents per 1000 gallons and 3,031,700 gallons at 15 cents per 1000 gallons made a total of $454.65. This was offset by reâ€" The opinion was expressed that Richmond Hill council knowing for some time of the faulty main should have had it fixed or given the town- ship notice. The clerk said nn such notice had ever been received. Then again according to the voluminous a- greement between the two municipal- ities Richmond Hill was to bill Markâ€" ham township ‘at the end of every year. The clerk stated that the preâ€" sent account Was the first one ever reâ€" ceived. Had there been a yearly ac- count the leakage 'would have been noted years ago and the large loss averted it was claimed. The defective main was fixed ‘re- cently on the order. of engineer Bab- cock of Markham township at an ex- pense of fifteen dollars. The quest- ion now uppermost in the minds of the Markham township council is should or should not the bill be paid. The matter was laid over for another meeting and in the meantime Rich- mond Hill authorities will be inter- viewed. i It was a perfectly good idea to have the water service available to the‘peo- ple of this area, a good agreement was ‘drawn up and everything was fine ‘BUT, there came a leak in the water lmain. The leak was there for some time, in fact long enough according to the reading of the meter to allow 1some three million gallons of water to escape and this at 15 cents per one thousand gallons amounted to a loss to the township of $389.39 during the five years. It is no wonder the Markham township councillors feel that there is not much money in the waterworks business. l Markham township council members were nonplussed at the regular meetâ€" ing on Monday when they received a bill for $389.39 from the village of Richmond Hill. They were still more nonplussed on going into the matter to discover that they had nothing to show for the money. The account was from the Richmond Hill waterworks in connection with the extension of the Richmond Hill system which ser-l l i -ves a small area in Markham town- 'ship in the Elmwood Park subâ€"divis- ion just south of the village. When the waterworks was installed in Rich- mond Hill interested parties foresee- ing possible real estate development in the suburbs sought to have the ad-. vantages of the system available to those just outside as well as those in the village. As a result a water main! was constructed in the township as a {local improvement on the properties" benefitting. A meter was installed‘ :at the village limits and the agree-' ment Was that the township would pay‘ for all water going through the said ‘ meter. The village agreed to collect ‘ the accounts of all township users the ‘1 same as those in the village and Mark- ham would in turn be credited with i‘ the receipts thus obtained and billed yearly for the water passing through the main meter. ‘ [Markham Township Councillors See Little Proï¬t ln l Waterworks Business - Sell $67.45 Worth and Leak Responsible for 3338939. The Fire Brigade had a quick run ‘on Thursday of last week, when the ‘ gas stove in Mr. Gordon Line’s kitchen exploded. The woodwork was badly scorched but the fire was soon extingâ€" uished. Statisticians around the council tab- le figured that if the leak commenced at the very commencement of service in 1925 the water has been running away at the rate of about one gallon ‘21. minute and every s’xteen minutes in the five years it cost Markham town- ship a loss of 15 cents in the water- works business. ceipts from water users in Markham township of‘ $67.41 leaving a balance of $389.39.
