The latest news from the farm yard is that blue eggs will figure in future productions. A fowl which comes from Chili produces them‘and is be- ing brought to Canada. Thieves are not generally regarded as an industrious lot of people. Down at Meaford however a farmer reports the loss of about a dozen bags of po- tatoes which thieves dug from his patch during the night. Anniversary services will be held at Temperanceville United Church on Sunday next, October 5th. Rev. Dr. Norman will be the speaker at both services. RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2nd, 1930 Mr. Jas. Brodie, the veteran sheep king of Markham and Whitchurch Townships, has grown something new in the grain line this year. Last spring he secured a new barley seed, known as Wisconsin No. 57 Barbless ‘Barley, which yielded him 60 bushels to the acre this harvest. ‘ We have heard many an odd story but the latest to be going the rounds according to the Beaverton Express is that regarding a prediction that a war is not far away. .OId-timers base their predictions on the fact that the letter “B†was found on the leaves of the growing oats in the field this year. It is said that this sign never appears except as a forerunner of war. In the year 1914 this letter appeared last on the oats, and war was proâ€" claimed ere the harvest was garnered. DANGER â€" Keep out of car tracks is the warning on/ two new signs erec- ted at the entrances to Richmond Hill. It is a good move and may save thoughtless motorists from serious damage to their cars and injury to themselves. The tracks are danger- ous if the pavement is wet and the car travelling fast. Cross tracks slowly and' there is practically no danger. A plan is under way for the reclaim- ing of 8000 acres of Max-sh land in the Bradford district. We have recently exhibited large size tomatoes, home grown peaches, and even apple blossoms plucked in «September. There are reports of ex- tra large potatoes in many sections of Ontario and‘ it vyould be interesting to know who has grown the largest tubâ€" er in this district. Bring in your big potatoes so that The Liberal can an- nounce the annual championship. Stouffville business men are plann- ing a celebration to mark the opening of the new road thmï¬g’h the town. It Will probably take place about the middle of October. Whitchurch council have decided to pay a reward of $100 for information leading to the arrest or conviction of ,person or persons stealing chickens in that municipality. Counterfeit Bank of Nova Scotia ten-dollars bills are being circulated in Canada, accordéng to a warning is- sued by the post oflice department. Chicken thieves have been busy in the Milton district. Keep the chicken house well locked and remember chick- en thieves have a dislike fonan alert watch dog. V Have you some apples which you can spare to the poor and needy in Toronto. Telephone The Liberal Olf- ice, No. 9', Richmond Hill. The 78th annual fair of the Schom- berg Agricultural Society was held last week. It was featured by num- erous exhibits and a large attendance. The day of the small fair is not done; the fairs are staging a come-back. A new electric sign has been erect- ed at The Capitol theatre, North Tor- onto. The sign which contains thous- ands of electric light bulbs is most at- tractively colored and is one of the most modern electric signs in the City of Toronto. GENERAL NEWS AND VIEWS f The clean milking competition was a feature of Schomberg Fair last week and the first of its kind~ in Canâ€" ada. Dr. Forsythe, of the Provin- cial Department of Health, was jud- 'ge in this event, and made the follow- ï¬ng awards: First, Chris Hodgins, Schomberg; second, George Suhr, of Kleinburg; third, Geo. Dove, Noble- ton; fourth, Miss Kame Suhr, of Kleinburg; fifth, Earl Edwards, of Schomberg; sixth, Geo. WestIake, of :Caledon East. During the past few weeks some- body has been taking flowers from the graves in Aurora Cemetery. A few days ago a party placed‘ two vas- es of flowers on the graves of relat- ives or friends and on returning the next day found the vases had been stolen Last spring, Mr. R. E. White, of the Department of Agriculture, Newmar- ket, secured‘ through the co-operation of the Junior Farmers of York Counâ€" ty, samples of spring g'rains being sown on 'York County farms. One hundred and thirtyâ€"two samples of grain were collected, forwarded to the Government Seed Laboratory where they were tested and results sent back to each farmer. Professor Squirrel] of the Ontario Agricultural College states that the best seed of the best varieties will in. crease yields 33 per cent. Large plump seed gave an increased yield over the small seed in oats of 15 bushels per acre; in barley, 8 1-2 bushels per acre, and in winter wheat, 8 bushels per acre. This clearly shows the great importance of careful grading. Aurora United Church is to have new pews at a cost of $2,600. The building committee of the church ac- cepted the contract of the Gibbe Furâ€" niture 00., of Waterloo Ito reseat the ‘church at that price. Forty-eight samples of tested. Eight graded No. ed No. 2; 11 graded No. were rejected. " Forty-five samples of Barley were tested. Seventeen graded No. 1; 12 graded No. 2; 8 graded No. 3, and 8 were rejected. York County Seed Survey RESULTS OF TEST SHOW MANY FARMERS SOW INFERIOR SEED The above shows that many farmers are still sowing inferior seed grain. The twentyâ€"one rejected samples of oats contained in each pound 41 noxi- ous weed seeds, 190 other weed seeds and 506 other cultivated grains. A very pleasant Sunday afternoon was enjoyed when Mr. and Mrs. D. Wideman, Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Wide- man and Mr. and Mrs. L. Sluggett, of Toronto, were entertained by Mr. L. B. Heise and Miss Elva L. Heise. A pleasant drive was enjoyed by some of them to the shores of Lake Simcoe despite the fact that the air was a bit chilly.
