Finlay Telephoneâ€"Manic 3 GEO; KIDD THORNHILL DENTIST Toronto Adelaide 4140 ONTARIO Enona __.1L' and North } Some 50 young people of Whitchurâ€" .ch Township met at the residence of Morgan Baker, last week with a view of strengthening interest in the his- tory of York County. It was decid- ed to hold meetings monthly. If these meetings prove successful, an organization to foster and study of local history will be formed. Wolves, believed to be in fair size ;packs, have made their appearance in north Orillia and Mara and Rama townships. W. Baker, of Orillia, has shot one and wounded another in north Orillia a few miles from that town. Packs are moving south to more sett- led parts it is said, and farmers in the district surrounding Orillia are keep- ing a close lookout for the animals. ‘ Potatoes are being bought in car- load lots from farmers in the Uxbridâ€" ge district for 60 cents a bag. A bear has been reported roaming around the farms in the Gormley dis- trict. It has been noticed by differ- ent residents and it is said to be very large and that even dogs flee at the sight of him. R. N. Stokes, of the 9th line of Pickering, just west of Claremont had his barn burned last week. The fire started about 4 a. m. and is believed to be the work of chicken thieves as a bag with five chickens was found in a nearby field. In addition to the barn and contents four horses, one cow, all his implements and a number of hens were burned. ’ When Orillia elects its municipal council on December lst for 1931, the electors are asked to say if they are in favor of Daylight Saving, and also if they are in favor of Civic Holiday being held each year in that ‘town on the lst Monday in August? A married lady had a surprise party on her birthday recently and her hus- band presented her with a very pretty piano lamp. He was much flattered when she told him that she intended to give it his name; until he asked her reasons for so peculiar a proceeding. “Well,” said she, “you know, dear, it is handsome to look at, requires a good deal of attention; is not remark- ably brilliant; sometimes unsteady on its legs; liable to explode when half full; flares up occasionally; is always out at bed time and is bound to smoke.” We clip the following from an ex- [change but have not gone to the trouâ€" ible of verifying it by actual calcu- ‘lation: “If twelve persons were to agree to dine together every day, but never sit exactly in the same order around the table, it would take 18,000- .000 years at the rate of one dinner a day, and they would have to eat more than 470,000,000 dinners, before they could _get through all the possible ar- rangements in which they could place themselves.” Morley Kinnee, of Maple, has been appointed to fill the vacancy of man- ager of Woodbridge and Vaughan telâ€" ephone system, caused by the resig- nation of James Leonard, through ill- ness. Barrie is to receive $5000. from the unemployment relief fund. The town of Aurora has made appli- cation to the controller of unemploy- ment aid funds with the view to hav- ing some assistance given to that municipality. It is proposed to con- struct a trunk sewer. There are rumors of a spirited mun- icipal contest in the town of Newmar- ket in January. Contests are pre- dicted for the offices of Reeve, Depuâ€" ty-Reeves and Councillors. RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1930 Aurora will be represented by a Junior and an Intermediate team in the O.H.A. series this year. l The town of Newmarket has been successful in securing a portion of the governmenet grant to aid unemploy- ment and the construction of water mains Will be commenced immedia Leiy as a means of providing for the un- employed of the municipality. A valuable black fox recently e},- caped from the Markham Fox Ram-h and for some time has defied all of- forts to capture him. Enjoying his liberty to the full the wily fox has preyed on choice Markham fowl much to the disapproval of poultry owners. GENERAL NEWS AND VIEWS PHONE 188 THE JONES COAL CO. FOR COAL OR WOOD. If you have live stock for sale, household articles which you have no use for, The Liberal will find you a buyer. ‘ There was quite a good attendance last Thursday at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute which was held at the home of Mrs. Gunn. After the usual programme tea was served by the committee in charge. Next week the euchre club will meet as usual on Wednesday evening. To begin at 8 o’clock sharp. The hunting parties returned from the north at the end of the week havâ€" ing had quite a successful two weeks shooting. Rev. C. H. Bowman occupied the pulpi’d of the Presbyterian Church at Richmond Hill on Sunday evening. v Do not forget the Bazaar and Tea in St. Stephen’s Parish Hall on Saturday afternoon, November 22nd. Many useful articles 'Will be offered for sale. A large truck carrying soft drinks was overturned in the village one day last week. The upset was caused by a blow out of one of the tires. Very little damage was done. On Sunday a number of friends from Hamilton, Shelburne and other places called to see Mr. Argyle Camp- bell who is seriously ill at his home. On Sunday evening, Rev. D. Mar- shall, of Richmond Hill, preached in St. Andrew’s Church under the ausp- ices of the Women’s Missionary So- 'ciety. Mrs. Caleb Crook and Mr. Chas. Crook have moved into their new home recently purchased from Mrs. J. Richards. Miss M. E. Morrison returned on Sunday after spending two weeks with friends in Toronto. The neighbours of the late J. E. Kirby made a bee last week and plowâ€" ed thirty-one acres on the farm. This was a kindly act and is to be commen- ded. " There was a good attendance at the Bazaar and afternoon tea served by the Girl’s Club of St. Andrew’s Church in the Masonic Hall on Saturday last. Special music is being prepared for the anniversary services next Sunday when Rev. Dr. Solomon Cleaver will preach in the morning and Rev. J. F. Reycraft will occupy the pulpit at 7 p. m. On Friday, November 28th, a fowl supper will be held in the Sun- day School Hall to be followed by a grand concert in the Community Hall to be given by the choir of Yonge St. United Church, Toronto; When the big gate at Portsmouth penitentiary opened the other morning a man who has spent nineteen years in the big prison was ushered in for another term of three years. He was “Shorty” Hess, whom the police know from one end of Canada to the other,-and in the United States, as well. He is classed as a professional burglar, but has never been known to carry a gun. “Yes, sir. I’ve been a crook 41 years and when this stretch is over I still will be a crook,” he said. The fact that he was going back to prisbn didn’t seem to bother him, his only complaint being about the small- ness of his breakfast. “Mr. Sheriff, I wish you would have a photographer here to take a photo of my breakfast 1 and then I could have it enlarged,"l said the 67-year-old prisoner, who exâ€" pected to get'fifteen years instead of Ia measly three for his latest job in Windsor. But he can at least have ‘ the assurance that although his break- ‘fasts may be small, he can have them ‘ ‘ireg'ularly. We note that at the provincial plow- ing match this year that women were entered in the competition. It’s no use, fellows, you can’t keep ’em out of anything any more.
