THURSDAY, JUNE lst, 1933 The linotype is a very tricky piece of machinery and unless watched carefully will cause much trouble. Sometimes it drops two letters at a time instead of one and exercised that privilege in a U. S. A. weekly, where the arrival of an 11-pound baby was chronicled as Ill-pounder. Someone has said that “the modern girl is like the modern bungalowâ€" “painted in front, shingled behind and no upstairs.” Stayner is suffering from 3, prev- alence of rats. The local dump ap- pears to be the breeding place and the opinion is expressed that if some- thing is not done soon there will be a‘ decided menace from them, if not an actual plague. At a meeting of Alliston public school board it was decided to throw all teaching positions for next year open to applicants who must state the salary they will expect to receive. Reading that President Roosevelt enjoys each evening at the White House, a motion picture program in- cluding a feature film and a good comedy, the small boy is probably more determined than ever that he will some day be president. In the old country, sons-in-law wereI often given free board and lodging' instead of a dowry. A young man and his sweetheart were discussing; “ways and means’ one day. The girl’s§ father could not afford a dowry. The new Midland Arena Gardens had a very profitable season. After four months’ operation the company has been able to pay all operating expenses, invest a considerable amount upon additional equipment and still show a net profit of nearly $400. Young Man (hopefully)-â€"We might board with your parents until times get better. Tom Beattyâ€"“You gotta be care- ful what you say to a woman.” “Red” Roseâ€"“Oh, Yeah?” Tomâ€"“Sure, before'I married my wife, I told her I’d be her slave for lifeâ€"and darned if I ain’t.” The Girl (sighing)â€"Not a chance My parents are still boarding with my grandparents. A daily newspaper in Nice recently contained the following advertise- mentzâ€"“Millionnaire, young, good- looking, Wishes to meet, with a view to marriage, a girl like the heroine in Mâ€"â€"’s novel.” Within 24 hours, the novel in question was sold out. Salaries of teachers in Goldwater’s continuation and public schools are to be cut 20 pier cent, effective Sept. 1. Six teachers, two in the continuaâ€" tion school and four in the public school, will be affected by the cut which will reduce the annual salary expenditure by $1,490. Politeness is like the air in a tire; it costs nothing, but makes things Applicants for relief in Midland next winter will not be considered un- less they have made a real attempt to cultivate a vegetable garden this summer. They will also be notified that fuel next winter will be supplied in greatly reduced quantities. Owen Sound Council has passed a resolution advising the Board of Edâ€" ucation, Police Commission, Library Board and Parks Commission, that Council will be unable to pass esti- mates to them in excess of a percen- tage of taxes that is collected this year, based on 1932 estimates. All kinds of crops throughout the district have experienced wonderful growth in the past ten days. The time apparently lost through unfavor- able and backward spring weather would now seem to be more than re- gained. According to a resolution passed at the recent meeting of Markham townâ€" ship council the assessors will notify ths constable of dog owners who have not paid their dog tax, and the con- stable is instructed to collect the tax or destroy the dog. This should get rid of a lot of Wandering canines in Markham township. A larger crowd than last year at- tended the annual Spring Fair at Ux- bridge on May 24th, but the number of exhibitors was considerably less than in former years.
