P. Mulock R. R. No. 2 Toronto Reeve J. A; Greene and all Members 1934 Council Given Acclamatien As predicted in these columns a week ago the members of Richmond Hill Municipal Council and Board of Education were given an acclamation for another year. The nomination meeting held in the Municipal Hall, Monday evening, was not largely at- tended and only enough candidates were nominated to fill the several offices and the nominees were accord- ingly declared elected by acclamation. years had come in fairly well, about $10,000.00 having been paid in. Nevertheless arrears of‘ taxes still presented a difficult problem, the amount now outsfanding being about $18,000.00. The municipality, he said was ending 1934 with an improved financial position as compared to a In acting as chairman of the meet- ing following the official nominations Clerk and Treasurer A. J. Hume stated it was the thirtyâ€"fifth time he had acted in this capacity. In re- viewing the past year he said he was glad to report that the town had a very satisfactory year. Tax collec- tions‘ for the year were about seventy per cent of the levy which was some six per cent better than in 1933. During the year arrears of former year ago. The arena showed a slight deficit on the year but ths was due to the fact that a sound system had been installed at a cost of over $250.00 which would prove a great asset for many years to come. Relief was still a serious matter but due to efforts of council it had been kept to a. minimum. Expenditure for direct relief amounted to $1174.00 and of this the government grant was $782 leaving $392.00 to be paid from the village levy. In addition to this a considerable amount of relief work was done for which substantial gov- ernment grants were received. This government aid was received, said the clerk, by the persistent effort of the reeve and council and the co- operation of the government. The nominations were as follows: Reeve, J. A. Greene by Robert Endean and A. A. Eden; for Councillors, H. J. Mills by A. D. Buchanan and J. R. Herrington, William Neal by R. Case- ment and A. Hawkes, Alex. Little by J. A. Greene and W. Neal, Wes Mid- dleton by A. A. Eden and W. H. Mylks. School Trustees: A. D. Buchanan by J. R. Harrington and J. Beresford, P. E. Angle by R. Endean and H. P. Trowell, L. A. Hill by A. L. Phipps and R". D. Little. Dvebenture payments make up a large portion of the Richmond Hill ratepayers†tax bill. This year the debenture payments amounted to over $25,000.00. Mr. Hume recalled that when he first became clerk and treas- urer the total debenture debt of the municipality was $187.00. However, it was encouraging to know that this year two debentures matured' which would mean a half mill saving next year, and in 1935 two more are re- tired and in 1936 the arena will be paid for which will mean a saving of the $1,200.00 annual payment. The tax rate in Richmond Hill was reduced one mill in 1934 and four mills in 1933 making a reduction of five mills in two years and as far as I am aware, said thy espeaker, no person is kicking about that. The village paid this year a county tax of about $7,000.00 which was some $400 less than last year. The Waterworks system had paid operating expenses this year and paid back to the general fund $1,550.00 advanced some years ago to pay for an extension. Reeve J. A. Greene, who after two years as reeve, was given an ac- clamation for a third term expressed his thanks to the ratepayers of Richâ€" mond Hill for the confidence ex- In paying tribute to Reeve J. A: Greene and members of the , 1934 municipal council Mr. Hume stated that in all his years as clerk he could say that the council of the past year was one of the strongest and most economical and that a. lot of splendid work'had been accomplished. In con- cluding the esteemed clerk and'treas- urer stated that he could see brighter days ahead for Richmond Hill. RICHMOND HILL. ONTARIO THURSDAY. In 1934 we balanced our budget, he said, {which was something new in county laffairs. The taking over by the Hep- ;burn government of the full cost of Iprovincial highways would mean a lreduction in county taxation. 7 2 H. J. If he had been able‘ to render some useful service to the people of Richmond Hill in the past he hoped to be able to render even better service in the future and he assured the ratepayers that he was at their service at any time to do anything possible for the betterment of the community. In all his years in municipal work he had never been associated with a better council than it was his privilege to work with in 1934 and he expressed his thanks to them for their loyal support and' co- operation. It would be his aim to continue to try to reduce taxation and appealed to the citizens to help boost Richmond Hill by inviting their friends to come and live here. It‘ had been a real pleasure to serve the electors as a member of council and he would endeavour to give his best service in the coming year. Bill Neal, re-elected to council af- ter completing one year in council, reviewed the work in the waterworks department of which he was chair- man.
