[Constable Adam Hamilton, who looks Here, young men, is the “ideal male of the species.” ’ A Winning smil-e. Not too handsome. High moral standards. A sense of humor. Must love children. Must be able to support family. One deserving of respect at all times. 0 Hon. T. B. McQuesten, Minister of Highways, has the right idea. when he intimates that punishments for liola- tion of the traffic laws will be through suspension of driving permits rather than thrO‘Igh fines. To many reck- less drivers, fines to do mean much, but if they lost their right to drive for some months they Will be likely to pay some heed to the rules of‘ safety. This “ideal man” is a composite created by some 40 yoqu business women throughout Canada. RICHMOND HILL. ONTARIO THURSDAY, MARCH 14th, 1935 A delegate at the Bicycle Associa- tion convention last week in Toronto made the statement that 27,000 bicycles had been stolen in Canada during 1934 and only 10 per cent of that number were recovered. This uncovers ya 'new field for active in- surance agents. To-day proceedings of Brantford, Ontario, city council are sober and dignified but in 1847 things may have been different. Anyway the village council that year passed a resolution “that any member coming to council drunk and acting like a fool shall not be listened to.” The Acadian of Wolfville, N.S., com plains that not only is the publisher compelled to act as tax collector for the federal government in the matter of sales tax but he is required to pay a fee each year “for the privilege of performing this far from pleasant service." Austin Govette, Meaford, captured a 71/2-pound Whitefish with his bare hands, after it had escaped his line. The incident occurred while he was fishing for herring through a. hole in the ice. after the summer cottages on the east side of Owen Sound bay during the winter season, reports having noted the'u'acks of at least two wolves which have been killing rabbits. When the preacher called for Wo- men to stand up and promise to go home and mother their husbands, only one little woman arose, and when he told her to go home at once and mother her husband, she said, “Moth- er him? I thought you said smother him." “Thank ye,” replied the Scot. “I canna pay railway fare." “Well, man,” said an Englishman at last, “Suppose you can tell us some- thing you can’t do, and by Jove, I’ll undertake to do it myself." In the dressing room of the tram the Scot had been boring everyone with tales of the great deeds he had done. The flapper thinks a grand piona is one that plays by pushing a. button. Weather forecast: More or less winter or more or less spring. March will go out like a lion or like a. lamb or be moderately well behaved. The event of the coming weekâ€"end is “The Belle of Barcelona” to be proâ€" duced by the choir of the Richmond Hill Un'ited Church. Skip “Car” Yevex of the Richmond Hill Curling Club won the Davison Challenge Cup from Thornhill last week and on Tuesday night in a re- turn challenge game lost the trophy again to skip Bob Wright of Therm hill. Skip “Gid” Moodie of Richmond Hill now has a challenge in for the Cup, and first time.ice conditions permit the game will be played. Lawn Bowlers are preparing for the coming season and a meeting to make plans will be held next Tuesday eve- ning. Springlike weather this week and householders look forward with joy to the pl'.asure of laying down the snow shovel and the coal shovel. GENERAL NEWS AND VIEWS . Moved by J. S. Lawson, seconded ‘by J. Jeffersonâ€"That this Council strongly recommend to the Honour- :able the Minister of Highways that 'the pavement on the Highway to H01- land Landing Hill be altered to run in a straight line and thereby avoid the dangerous curve now existing on this hill. On Wednesday evening last the members of the Euchre Club and their families gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Henslhaw. An oyster supper was served. When everyone had done justice to this bountiful repast. thebremaind‘er of the evening was spent in playing euchre. There were 'nine tables and fifteen hands played. Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Ray Jennings for the neatest scorecard, to Mrs. Norman Rumble and Mr. Fred Hare for the most lone hands. Everyone playing received a white elephant prize. on relief, which Shall be available to anyone seeking help, and we would respectfully ask the farmers to make use of this service. Carried. Moved by L. Goodfellow, seconded by G. J. Foxâ€"That whereas a. reso- lution was passed by this Council on January 14, 1935, as follows: “That whereas the present Government has passed a ruling that all relief recip- ients must work for any relief re- ceived, therefore, be it resolved that if any of these relief men refuse to work for farmer who offer:- them work alt a. fair scale of wages that recipients be immediately cut out,” and whereas all relief works shall be closed on March 30, 1935; therefore it is here- by ordered that the Clerk and Relief Officer keep a list of those registered A real “Irish Wit” program is be- ing arranged by Mrs. Wilbert Jenâ€" nings on behalf of the Mission Band and the Literary and Music Convenor of the YP.S., Mrs. Wesley Lloyd. Everyone welcome. The Y.P.S. on Friday night was in charge of the Christian Fellowship convenor, Miss Mary Barker. Miss Annie Barker. who has been home for some meeks recuperating! after a nervous breakdown, returnedi to take up her duties at Holstein on! This concludes the meetings of the club for this season. Unemployment Relief Worksâ€"$610.20 Roadâ€"$348.20. Resolutions Passed :â€" As was expected, the Liberal can- didate was elected in the Nipissing bye-election, by a big majorityâ€"more than 7000 over his only opponent, E. J. Lawrence, the OCR candidate. Before the election, the North Bay Nugget remarked that the $8000 spent on taking the vote could have been used to better advantage. The result cannot be said to show any marked dissatisfaction with the Hepburn Government. “To save him from mistakes, bury him. Dead people are the only ones who never make mistakes."â€"â€"Wiscon- sin Press. ’ Here is at least one minister who appreciates the editor. At a recent editorial convention, a Kansas mini- ster is reported to have offered the following toast: “To save him from despair, send him every item of news you can get hold of. “To save him from profanity, write your correspondence plainly on one side of the sheet and send it in as early as possible. King Township Council “To savn him from bankruptcy ad- vertise in his paper liberally. “To Save an editor from starvation, take his paper and pay for it promptly. 82 Yonge St. A meeting of the electors of the Township of Vaughan will be held in the Town Hall, Vellore, on Monday, March 16th, for the purpose of nomi- nating a candidate for the position of second Deputy-Reeve for the bal- ance of the year to take the place of the late Mr. Daniel Reaman. The lamb was perfect in every way, and had six legs, 3 tails, 2 heads and 3 eyes. One tail pro- truded from behind the shoulders. It lived only a short time. Our Canadian Winter No doubt. most people are ready to say good-bye to the winter, which has been an unusually severe one, and are prepared to welcome Spring with the pleasant sunshine, followed by green fields, trees and flowers. Although extremely cold, many advantages are derived from such a. winter. The sleighing has been remarkably good; {for several months in succession, which enables farmers, lumbermen and others: to make rapid headway with their work, which, in an open winter, has to be done under diffi- culties. We should wait patiently for milder weather and endeavour to en- joy what we have, for it is well to remember that it takes more than the scorching summer sun, annoying mosquitoes and pestering flies to render us supremely happy. _ | I Sunday. Miss Stella Levison of Toronto spent Sunday at her home here. Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Jennings visâ€" ited Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Wideman at Markham on Sunday. A lovely quilt was quilted. The Willing Workers Mission Band met at the home of Mrs. N. Thompson on Saturday. In response to a numerously signed petition of ratepayers, the Village Council has decided on selling the park lot purchased some months ago and buying another, better suited to the wants of the Village. As yet no site has been definitely fixed upon, but several liberal offers have been received, ,from which We hope they will make a good choice. To select a lot satisfactory to all parties will be an utter impossibility, but we trust the greatest care will be exercised in the sielect'on.
