At the annual convention of the C. \V.N.A. in Toronto last week we met and talked with newspaper publishers from all parts of Canada, and the general concciisus of opinion is that there is no doubt about the outcomc of the coming federal elections. It is generally conceded that Rt. Hon. \V. L. Mackenzie King will be Can- ada’s next Prime Minister with a very substantial majority. The reception of the Stevens branch of the conserva- tive party has not been as enthus- iastic as was at first expected ac- cording to our fellow editors. A campaign for a metropolitan area comprising the city of Toronto and the suburban municipalities. has been launched this week by York board of trade, which is seeking to consolidate all the forces iii the var- ious suburban municipalities which favor such an area. James P. Andrews, secretary- manager of the York board of trade, yesterday sent out invitations to all municipalities concerned to support the scheme actively and to join in a united appeal to the provincial gov- ernment to take action now. Possibility that a campaign against slot machines will be waged by the City Council was seen when a move to have such equipment licensed re- ceived momentum through recommen- dation of some members of Council. Not long ago the Ministerial Associa- tion protested to Council regarding the prevalence of slot machines, and the question was referred to a com- mittee. A plan of licensing the ma- chines, with a stiff fee, has been suggested. I Motorists in Woodstock are chuck- ling over a sign intended by the city for tourists. The sign was placed at the outskirts of the city, but is lo- cated on the wrong side of the road, directly at the entrance of Wood- stock eemetery. It reads, “Goodbye and good luck.†Thanksgiving Day in Canada has» been set for Monday, October 14. A proclamation has been issued declar- ing the date. This follows the prac- tice, since Remembrance Day was creâ€" ated a holiday separate from Thanks- giving Day, of having the national thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. l , A Guelph woman, only 32 years of age, is now a grandmother. She is Mrs. D. Ferraro and lives at 87 Elizabeth street in that city. Her daughter, Mrs. G. Ferraro, aged 17, gave birth to a son the other day. The grandmother was married at the age of 15. The object of the meeting is to consider the advisability of the council assum- ing the responsibility of the Public Library. This seems to be the only way to ensure its future success. Another Citizen Gone It is our painful duty to record this week the death of one «of our most useful, respected and esteemed citizens in the person of Benjamin Redditt. Although deceased had been ailing for the past three or four. months, yet until a few days before he died, his family and friends had hopes: of his recovery. For several years Mr. Redditt sat as a usefull member in the Village Council, and since the organization of the Fire Brigade, 25 years ago, he was one of its most prominent and useful mem-. bers. Deceased leaves a wife andl nine sons and daughters to mourn the loss and to these sincere sympathy conviction that we ourselves could get is extended. THIRTY YEARS AGO From Our Issue of July 27th, 1905 Rev. Thos. Fenwick, Presbyterian minister of Woodbridge, died on Fri- day last. Deceased was 75 years of age, and had been Pastor of the Church at Woodbridge since the year 1884. ‘ The Toronto and York Radial Rail- way Company are installing a tele- phone along the line of the Metro- politan. Wires have been run into the station here and it is hoped the receiver will be ready for business in a few days. Mr. Blanchard and Mr. Startup are finishing up the asphalting for this season. The last sections of pave- ment laid down are in front of the Waiting Room, J. Eyer & Son’s prem- ises, Glass Bros butcher shop, Lud- ford’s store, the parsonage, and a patch at the Public School. D. M. Boyle and son of Langstaff, have ordered from the Waterloo Manufacturing Company, through their agent, Mr. J. H. The harvest is heavy in this section of county, and by all accounts Mr. Boyle will have a large run during the present sea- son. North York Conservatives held a monster picnic in the Agricultural Grounds, Newmarket, yesterday. The chairman was Major Allan; the speakers were Hon. W. J. Hanna and J. P.
