The reason there are not better ideas to solve our problems is that folks have discovered that the concentra- tion necessary to evolve a medium sized idea is as much a drain on energy as lifting a. two hundred pound sack of salt. So most people go back to their puttering or moder- ate physical effort and growl about the intellectuals being a lazy lot. “Water is a light coloured, wet liquid. good for man‘ or animal. It turns dark when you wash in it.” This was handed in by a pupil when the teacher asked the class to write a short story on “Water.” The home appears to have lost the control that it once had over child- ren, and now depends, on the school to teach good manners, respect for elders and spiritual development. Kenneth G. B. Ketchum, headmaster, of St. Andrew’s Clollege, told the Board of Trade Club at its weekly di'nner recently in the King Edward Hotel, Toronto, “Good manners, re: spect for elders and the ability to mix with others are things that are not inherited but rather have to be learned,” Mr. Ketchum declared. KANE matter with experts have so long it’s Phone w Personally I have tried to under- stand and to judge the soundness of the arguments and statements, which Mr. Tutte has placed before the peo~ ple of Canada, With their application to our own national and social needs. By so doing I have also become con~ Vinced of the sound reasoning of both In a book of three parts in twenty chapters Mr. Tutte has dealt with the many sided questions which arise out of Major Douglas' proposals, as they will affect our people here in Canada, with a cleal'ness of statement that is helpful to all the students of the problems we have to meet. W. A Tutte of Vancouver, one of Canada’s best students and writers on economics, has 1followed the Social Credit teaching of Major C. H. Dougâ€" las of Great Britian, the outstanding exponent of a better way of supply- ing the national requirements of the people of Great Britain. Impressed with the soundness of Major Douglas’ teaching Mr. Tutte has discussed their application to the economic problems of our people here in Can- ada. Note: We certainly are pleased with the news that the County Coun- cil has balanced its budget, however, we cannot give too much praise to members of the County Council“ Un- less we are mistaken it was not until the bank absolutely laid down the law and started dictating the financial policy of the county that county finan- cial affairs were put in order, and spending kept within the budget. (Ed) It is difficult to discuss any issue that bears upon political service. Yet the urgencies of life demand from us such contribution as we may be en- abled to make for the national up- buildings of our people. May I ask from your readers a patient study of an issue which at least attempts to place before the people of Ontario, a statement by a student and writer of economic issues, dealing with one of the life problems of our citizens that will aid them to better judge the practical outcome of new lines of service which will affect the well beâ€" ing of the community by their adop- tion. Editor of The Liberal Sir:â€" W. A. Tutte, student and writer on economic problems, has become an endorser of Major C. H. Douglas’ Social Credit proposals for Canada. I always enjoy getting The Liberal [which I count as one of the n‘ews‘iesl land best home papers I have eve) dead. .I note that you are'-‘al\vays glad to take a rap at the County Coun- cil and while in much of yOur criticism of that body and their needlessly long sessions I heartin agree. I think they might merit some praise from your pen when we note the fine fin- ancial showing made‘ this year by them and reported in your last issue I think any body which can balance its budget in these times deserves some praise. Give them a break, Mr. Editor, give praise where praise is due. ' Editor of The Liberal Sir:â€" I just want to write to you to say how thankful people of Richmond Hill should be for at least two things. First was the big majority against selling beer by the glass here and the other was the banishing of slot ma- chines. Beer parlors are not an asset to any community and I think the slot machines were a real.curse. 1 know the business men who had them as well as all citizens should be glad that they are gone. Why authorities tolerated them so long was a mystery to me. Now if we could just clean up the menace of the illegal sale of intoxicants in the district we could call it a good year. I would humbly suggest that that very splendid orâ€" ganization which carried the wonder- ful victory against the beverage rooms keep up their efforts now and clean up the bootleggers.
