The act provides that be- fore procuring a marriage license each of the contracting parties shall make an affidavit stating the date on which the ceremony is to be held, that they are full eighteen years of age, and that there is no legal bar to their marriage. A record of these affidavits will be kept by the issuer of the licenses, and he will forward to the registrar-general’s depart- ment the names, ages, occupation.» and religion of the contracting par- ties. These new features of the mar- riage law were added at the sugges- tion of the ministers, who discussed themvpretty freely at their meetâ€" ings. Mr. David Murray, one of the wealthiest men in the Township of Vaughan, died at his home near Edgeley on Saturday last at the age of 80 years, 5 months, 18 days. De- ceased had been a successful. farmer and accumulated a large amount of property including land to the eXLent of about 1000 acres. He was a mem- ber ‘of the Lutheran denomination and was a Reformer in politics. He leaves a widow, two sons, George and Isaac, and two daughters, Mrs John Julian of Vellore and Mrs. George J. Keffer of Maple. The second feature of the ceiebra- tion service is the Seventy-fifth An- niversary of the Evangelical Luther- eran Synod of Canada. It was durâ€" ing the pastorate of tlie sainted Jeremiah Fishburn that steps were taken by him to call together the brethren and laymen of this faith in Ontario for the purpose of organiz- ing a synod. In the summer of 1861 a conference was called, which met in the present church building, when the Lutheran Synod of Canada was organized. Officials of the synod will be present at this service to participate in this his‘oric event. From a small beginning- the synod has grown to considerable strength With congregations in Ontario and Quebec. It maintains a College and Seminary at Waterloo, Ontario, the former being affiliated with Western University at London, Ontario. WAY BACK IN LIBERAL FILES On Saturday, July 11th, Richmond Hill Lacrosse Team drove to Toronto Junction to play a match in the championship series with the team of that town. The day was very warm, and the park did not tend in any way to improve the play which was at times not of the first order, and after two hours’ play Toronto Junc- tion won by the score of 4 to 3. The early beginnings of Zion Luth~ eran church date back to the first years of the nineteenth century, when a number of pioneer Lutherans from Summerset County, Pennsylâ€" vania, settled in Vaughan Township. These God-fearing men brough: With them their Bibles, Hymn books and Catechisms and at once took steps to organize a congregation of their Faith. Fainin names prominent in the early organization were: Kefferr Fischer, Stong, Witmer, Grosse, dniâ€" der, Feig‘htner, Troyer and others. The congregation was organized in 1806, one hundred and thirty years ago and is the oldest cong3egation in Vaughan township. The unveiling of a Memonal Cairn promises to be an interesting fea- ture of the anniversary service. It is now being erected jointly by the congregation and the Lutheran Synod of Canada in grateful remembrance From our Issue of July 16th, 1896 An Anniversary Service, marking- three important events in their "his- tory, will be held by Zion Evangeli- cal Lutheran Church, fourth Conces- sion of Vaughan, one and oneâ€"half miles south of Maple, on Sunday af- ternoon, July 19th, at 3.00 o’clock, Standard Time. In the past it has been the custom to mark letters not fully prepaid with a figure speci- fsiing the amount the receiver would have to pay. The new stamp is bluish in color and is in several de- nominations. It is expected to be given out for use shortly. At the last meeting of the Board of Education the Management Com- mittee were authorized to make re- pairs at both the High School and the Public School during the holi- days. We believe it is the inten- tion of the Committee to modernize the appearance of the senior room of the Public School by putting in new windows and upâ€"tJo-date curtains. tains. :hese days writes: “At this critical time, when conditions in the Luth- eran church in Canada were mast deplorable and the danger of its ex- tinction was impending, God moved the heart of a pious laymen in Zion’s Church, Adam Keffer, to an under- taking which eventually proved the salvation of the church. Early in 1.849 he left his home, setting out for Pittsburgh, walking 500 miles, to plead with the Pittsburgh Synod assembled in its annual convention for pastors, to take care of the shep- herdless flocks of the Canadian Luth- eran Church.†So effective was the plea of this heroic defender of the Faith that the synod was moved to take some action and send an offi- cial to investigate the field. The re- port sent back to the synod soon From our Issue of July 12th, 1906 of Adam Keffer, one of the pioneers of the congregation. From 1830 to 1850 the congregation passed through troublesome times and the tiny flock :Iung tenaciously to their faith.
