Phone RA. 5429 LIFE etc. In imposing penalties amounting to $25,000 against a motorist whose car was involved in an accident in which one man was killed and sev- eral severely injured, Justice W. H. ‘Black of the Bronx Supreme Court ,clas‘sed reckless and drunken drivers ias “murderers at heart.” “In these days of callous and reckleSS disre- gard for human life,” Judge Black said, “the court is moved to remark that, at least as far as his victims, are concerned, the man who drives a car while he is under the influ- ence of liquor or who disregards the most obvious traffic signals and who ‘hogs’ a highway at early morning when there is no traffic in sight; who drives on the Wrong side of the road; who fails to give the right of way‘ to the car coming from his right, or who gambles on his mistaken aâ€" bility to ‘get by’ with any sort of foolish driving, is every Whit as much a murderer at heart as a man who kills with knife or firearm.” RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, JULY 23rd, 1936 Work on the grading, it was re- ported at Queen’s Park is expected to commence this fall and the auth- orities plan to have the new road well on the road to completion before the end of next year. Minister of Highways, T. B. Mc- Queston has announuced that he will call for tenders almost immediately on this right of way. These tenders will be for a three-lane highway. The road will go by way of Brown‘s Line through Lleinburg, Nobleton and Schomberg to Barrie. The projected north and south highway which is to parallel Yonge Street west of Toronto will be a [00 foot right of way capable of devel- opment into a fourâ€"lane road, De- partment of Highways officials have said. Tessing of cattle in YOVK County in connection with the establishment of a tuberculosis-restricted area has commenced by two inspectors of the Dominion Heatlh of Animals Branch. Testing commenced at Claireville with one inspector working south inâ€" to Etobicoke township and the other north along the Peel boundary into Vaughan township. More inspectors will be available later when retest- ing is completed in Peel and Haltov: counties. Popper Dionne has crashed the sports page; of the New York pap- ers. One enterprising headline Writ- er, following the birth of the 12th child, captioned the story “Dionne Singles." A cheering thought. It is prophe- sied that the winter of 1936-37 will be the most severe this country has ever sea: A rich American tourist got lost in the Highlands of Scotland. lie wandered about all day, suffering un- usual hardships and hoping for the sight of '1 human being. Or; towards night, he was rewarded, when he came among a man in kilos. “I’m lost,” said the tourist. “Aye. I ken tha ,” answered the Scot. “ButL have they offsred a reward for ye yet?” A steady hand at the wheel may mean two less hands in- the morgue. Drive carefully at all times but espeâ€" cially during the summer season when traffic is heaviest, says the Fort Erie Times-Review. In its “Try Courtesy" campaign the Departmert of Highways is striving to in-stil tins idea of care and steadiness in driv- ing. Every motorist should pay heed to the good advice given. An Order-in-Council, fixing Monâ€" day, Oct. 12, as Thanksgiving Day, has been passed by the Dominion Government. It’s not so many months ago that people were kicking about the ex- treme cold and the heavy fuel hills. Looking back now at such a condi- tion, the retrospect is not unplea- sant with the mercury standing in the vicinity of the century mark. A contingent of twenty ti‘ousand rainbow trout was deposited in the east branch of the Humber {ivgr just north of Hicks’ Dam, Pinegrovc, by the Game and Fish Department of the Ontario Government. For people who complain 5‘) much about the cold in the winter. We cer-‘ tainly complain a lot about the heat in summer. General News & Views ‘ In looking over the minutes of the last village council meeting of B01- ton as appeared in the Enterprise last week we noticed the following motion: Moved by Mr. Armstrong and seconded by Mr. Westlakeâ€"That several complaints having come to the council complaining that young ladies and young men are coming to the village with their bodies not be- ing properly covered, that they be notified through the Enterprise that this council will not tolerate this in future. The 7th annual basket picnic of the Peel and Halbon Old Timers Asso- ciation of Manitoba was held at Souris, Man., on Wednesday, June 24 with 125 in attendance. ‘ Jefferson Football team played a friendly game with Richmond Hill here on Friday evening with the 10- cal team the winners. The game was refereed by Mr. A. Hart of Jeffer- son. The line-up was as follows-:â€" Jefferson: E. Cooney, goal, J. Camp- bell, V. Jones, J. Jones, J. Phillips, J. Grady, F. Grady, S. Wilson, H. Hopper, F. Lyons, H. Stackfield. Rich- mond Hill, D. Atkinson, goal, F. Bur- nett, A. Watson, L. Soules, W. Trench R. Goode, G. Topper, Wyc. Trench. J. Glover, F. Grady‘,‘ B. Newton. Mr. Harry Blanchard and Mr. John Startup have been overhauling the Village tanks and putting them in proper condition. A few days ago they uncovered the two large tanks opposite the Public School, cleaned them out, put new tops on, and had them refilled with water. The south tank was placed in- position over 30 years ago, and the lumber is in very good condition. Mrs. Page of Concord has pul- chased a lot from Mr. David Gray, directly north of the latter's resi- dence, and will erect thereon this summer a‘ brick clad dwelling for which plans have already been drawn. Mrs. Page and daughters will remove here as soon as their new home is finished. THIRTY YEARS AGO Carpenters have commenced buildâ€" ing the new James Bay Railway sta~ tion- at Richmond Hill. The new structure will add considerably to the appearance of the East.side. Mr. John Knowles was on Mon day elected by acclamation, Mayor of Aurora, succeeding Mr. F. T. Daville who was recently appointed sheriff of York. 1 WAY BACK IN LIBERAL FILES The head coachman of Mr. Wm. Mulock. the new Postmaste: General, passed through the Vallage on Tues~ day with a number of driving horses en route for the North York farm and summer residence. A fine day, a large crowd of spec- tators, good scientific lacrossefand a victory by a score of 6 to cl for Richmond Hill, were the character- istics of last Saturday’s game be- :wecn Bolton and Richmond Hill on the la+ter‘s ground. FORTY YEARS AGO From our Issue of July 23rd. 1896 / Farmerâ€"No, it ain’t a matter of etiquette a-tall. But one of them 'mules is liable most any time to kick you in the head, and I don’t want any lame mules round here to ’wait on. New Hired Handâ€"Why is that, is it a question of etiquette on the farm? Farmer (to new hired hand from the city)â€"Now, when you are at- tending to these mules, I warn you not to approach them from the rear without speaking to them first. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Anderson accompanied by Warren, Norma and Lorna Anderson and Miss Gladys Riddell spent the weekend at Wasaga Beach. The Young People’s Union of New- tonbrook United Church held a pic- ‘nic to Innisfil Park at Alcona Beach last Saturday and spent a most en- joyable' afternoon. A baseball game, races, contests, swimming and boatâ€"‘‘ ing were the chief attractions. Miss Freda Copeland was winner in a ball throwing contest, Mr. Irwin Brown in a blindfold race, Miss Ruth Allan in the young ladies’ race and Mr. Raymond Round in th= young men’s. Supper was served in the shady grove at the Point and all did ample justice to the good things with an abundance of watermelon and ice cream for the last course. It was an ideal day and an ideal place for :he picnic and everyone had a happy time. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Murchison have returned from their honeymoon spent in U.S.A. Rev. and Mrs. A. H. Halbert mot- ored down from Alcona Beach last Monday and made some calls on sick folk. Mrs. Glen Shaw and daughter Miss Margaret Shaw returned home last Thursday from a two weeks' holiday at Georgian Bay.
