Phone RA. 5429 etc. RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO, THURSDTY, SEPTEMBER 17th, 1936 Officials of the new James Bay Railway made a trial trip over the new road last week stopping at Rich- mond Hill Where they were met by Reeve Crosby and Councillor Sandâ€" erson and made an inspection of the new station, water tank, etc. Mr. Neighorn, trustee for the Ar- tesian Water Company, and his so? licitor, Mr. Werrett, attended the council meeting- Tuesday‘ evening and got permission to lay pipes along Yonge Street through the Village. The above gentlemen have also re ceived permission from York and Vaughan townships, and hope to have a similar privilege from Mark- ham township. The company are. asking the Ontario Government for a charter to allow them to bring Water from artes-ian wells on the 8th Concession of Whitchurch, near Ring- wood, to Toronto Junction and other places along the line. The piping will strike Yonge Street about Elgin Mills, and will leave it at York Mills. This is a luxury to be looked for- ward to with pleasure. Mr. P. S. Gibson of Willowdale, was in the Village Friday survey- ing Centre Street West, with the obâ€" ject of widening that street. A walk through the Richmond Hill Cemetery will show that more than a century has passed since the bur- ial of some of our earliest inhabi- tants in “the city of the dead.” A little to the south of the walk may be seen a tomb stone bearing the inscription “Abner Miles, died July 26, 1806.” Mr. Miles who was the first owner of the Palmer farm, lot 45, is- said to be the first man buried in the cemetery. The stump of a pine tree about three feet in diam- eter, sawed off close to the ground a number of years ago, and which was planted after the burial, is an indication that many years have elapsed since the first burial. From our Issue of Sept. 13th, 1906 Mr. William Jones has sold to Mr. Vanderburgh, of Callender, Muskoka, his house and ten acres of land beâ€" ing part of Lot 27, 2nd Concession, Vaughan. Mr. Jones has purchased Mr. Cable's property, corner of Gen- tre and Elizabeth Streets, and will remove here in a few mOnths. Mr. Wm. Hardy, of the Township of McGillvray paid the Village an- other visit, calling on old friends. He says the Village has improved. His last visit was just thirty-five years ago. ' A large number of people attended the auction sale of farms at the Palmer House on Saturday. Auc- tioneer Saigeon first put up the Met- calf farm, on the 2nd Concession of Vaughan which was bought by Mr. Wm. Rumble. The price paid was $4,410. The Bernard place at Elgin Mills was afterwards offered and this was knocked down to Mr. Ingles- by, the price paid being $5,525. Rev. A. P. Brace of Lemonville, formerly of Carrville and Maple cir- cuit, was presented with an address of welcome by his congregation, on his return to the circuit from his re- cent wedding ti‘ip. THIRTY YEARS AGO The well-known legal firm of Muâ€" ~Iock, Miller, Crawther & Montgomâ€" ery have removed their offices from the corner of King and Church Sts., Toronto, to more commodious rooms over the Dominion Bank on the cor- ner of King and Yonge Streets. This is the best stand in the city. The homestead of the late H. Quetton St. George, is advertised for sale elsewhere in this paper. This place with its beautiful sheet of wat- er, and its magnificent grounds, is one of the loveliest spots in the Province. The adjourned meeting of the Board of Education was held on Monday, September 14th. Present: Messrs. Switzer, McDonald, McConaghy, Naughton, Storey, Harrison, Clubine, Lynett, Palmer, Boyle, Newton. Mr. Naughton in the chair. The chair- man announced that the meeting was held for the purpose of considering the advisability of procuring a fur- nace for the High School. The secre- tary read tenders which had been re- ceived from the McCIary Manufac- turing Company, Toronto; from Wm. Buck, Brantford; and from the J. F. Pease Company, Toronto. After carefully examining the tenders the Board decided to accept that of the Pease Company. The price to be paid is $137.50 for The Economy, No. 16, capacity 40,000 cubic feet. It is the intention of the Board to start the excavation at once. WAY BACK IN LIBERAL FILES From our Issue of Sept. 17th, 1896 FORTY YEARS AGO When a wife says, “you men are so helpless!” it means ‘her husband is stalling to escape a job he doesn’t like. FLOWERS OF THE MIND Last winter, when I was in: bed with the ’flu And a temperature of a hundred and two, - I was telling the gardner what he should do. You must keep the Neurosis well watered, I said, ' Be certain to weed the Anaemia; bed. That yellow Myopis is getting too [tall Tie up the Lumbago that grows on the wall. Those scarlet Convulsions are quite a disgrace, They're like the Delirium â€"â€" all over ‘ the place. The pink pyorrhea is covered. with blight, The golden Arthritis has died in the night. Those little dwarf Asthmas are nearâ€" ly in bloomâ€" But just then the doctor came into the room. â€"â€"â€"Reginald Arkell in 'Green Fingers.’ Dr. and Mrs. C. E. Hill, Lansing, returned home Sunday after an ab- sence of over seven weeks spent on the Vimy Pilgrimage and travelling ‘ in Europe and the British Isles. They report a very enjoyable time and like all travellens the best part was the homecoming and again meeting their children David and Nancy and their friends. Dr. Hill said that the most outstanding events were the Vimy Ceremony, Premier Baldwin’s Recep- tion and the Cenotaph Service, King Edward’s Garden Party, 6 days in 'Paris, a 6000 feet ascension by Al- 'pine railway up Mount Pilatus in Switzerland, 120 mile trip down the 'Rhine from Wiesbaden to Bonn, a trip across the Zuder Zee to Merkin, and an 100 minute trip by a Royal Dutch Air Liner from Amsterdam to London. The man or woman who takes out a driver’s license performs a volun- tary act which involves an implied contract with his fellow citizens. Surely one of the terms of that con- tract is a declaration on the driver’s part that he possesses and will exer- cise that speck of sense which tells him that brakes are life-savers. It is no life-amd-death matter if the engine won’t turn over, but a car that can’t be stopped within a rea- sonable distance is the equivalent of a mad elephantâ€"Winnipeg Tribune. Judithâ€"I’m getting a divorce the moment I’ve saved up enough. Marionâ€"Cash? Judithâ€"No, evidence. Municipal elections will be held in Newmarket on Monday, December 7, this year in stead of January 4, the ltown council decided at a meeting !held last week. It is thought the ‘new date would be more convenient [to both voters and candidates. They say that hard work never killed anyone, but it has scared a lot of people half to death. The annual plowing match of the North York Association is to be held some time in October at the farm of Geo. Rodanz (the Robert Miller Farm) at Ringwood. There are some eight hundred acres available on the farm for the match so it is expected there will be room for all plowmen who desire to take part in it. One more cutting of gram, and we shall be able to beat our lawn mow- ers in snow shovels. Fall fairs are here, and'winter will not be‘ long following. Pretty soon now you’ll be seeing predictions that it’ll be a. 10ng hard winter; a short open Winter, or a winter like we always get despite predictions. Motorists are warned to exercise great care in: passing cars with trailers attached, while rounding a bend in the road. Several accidents have been reported recently due to the fact that the trailers swung over sufficiently to hit passing cars. Merchants who advise people to "‘buy at home” and who deal out of town themselves are about as con- sistent as a Christian Science medi- cal doctor if you can. imagine such “an animal.” General News & Views RICHMOND TAILORS CLEANING 8: PRESSING SERVICE 13 THE VERY BEST HARRY R.
