Phone RA. 5429 etc. RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3lst, 1936. Deputy-Reeve Boynton' Weldrick expressed his thanks to the rate- payers for the acclamatiou accorded him and assured all of a continuance of his best efforts on «behalf of the municipality. He reviewed the world done in the township during the year pointing out that the council had spent $2000.00 on construction and $9000.00 on maintenance work. Speak- ing of county affairs Mr. Weldrick said he opposed the Children's Aid budget of $45,000 and pointed to the continually increasing costs of Moth- ers’ Allowances and Old Age Pen- sions. He paid tribute to the new clerk who he said would be a real asset to the township. Councillor J. A. Dick stated that he felt the roads to-day were better Reeve Robert W. Scott sincerely thanked the electors for their ex- pression of confidence by re-electing him- by acclamation as reeve 05f Vaughan township. Reviewing town- ship affairs rhe said that satisfacâ€" tory progress had been made during the year and he was happy to finish the year with a splendid financial statement. Although expenditure was kept down this year he thought the roads were never in better shape. Loans from the bank had been kept down during the year and there had been a very satisfactory increase in collection of taxes. Speaking of County affairs he expressed the opinion that the proposed change in payment of county councillors might speed up the sessions. The debt of the County had been reduced by a quarter million dollars in four years and this year hospitalization costs were reduced by some $13,000.00. The change in the Act regarding second- ary schools would mean a substantial- saving to Vaughan township.. The County had asked that the legislaâ€" tion be laid over for the time being but when it comes into effect Vaughan will save several thousand dollars in secondary education c0sts. no name was placed in nomination against them and while three new names were proposed for council none of those nominated expressed any desire to oppose the old c0unâ€" cil. The re-election by acclamation of the Vaughan council of 1936 cli- max-es an eventful and very successâ€" ful year in the history of the town- ship. The financial position of the municipality is better to-day than for some time with the treasurer’s annual statement showing a substan- tial surplus on the year’s operations. During the year the council faced many important decisions. There was a change in the important position of clerk and treasurer and the new incumbent of that office is giving genuine satisfaction and many well earned tributes were paid him at Monday’s nomination meeting.’ A change was made in the method of collection of taxes in that the old system of tax collectors was done away with and the new system apâ€" pears to be working very satisfac- torily. Tax collections showed an improvement over a year ago, and the payment of arrears during the year has been encouraging. In all it was a very satisfactory year for Vaughan township and the ratepay- ers showed their appreciation of the services of the members of council by according them an acclamation. There was a good crowd at the nomination meeting and there was very little in the way of criticism of township affairs. County affairs came in for some criticism, especially relating to the $1000.00 salary in- crease f-or the County treasurer, Children’s Aid] expenditures, and a1- lowances for County Councillors. Clerk and treasurer J. M. McDonâ€" Clerk and treasurer J. M. McDonâ€" ald presided at the nominations for the first time and showed his thorâ€" ough grasp of township affairs by a very clear statement of the town- ship finances. J. S. McNair, an_ex- reeve of the township was honored by election as chairman of the meet- ing held following the official nom- inations. As expected Reeve Robert W. Scott and all members of the 1936 Vaughan council received an acclamation at the annual nomination meeting held at Vellore Monday afternoon. It was a marked tribute to Reeve Scott and Deputyâ€"Reeve Boynton Weldrick that Vaughan Electors Show Their Approval of Council Record by Re-electing allbyAcclamation Financial Statement Reflects Very Successful Year Annual Nomination Featured By Absence of Criticism of Work of 1936 Council An instructive book is like preach- ing. The only people who will read it are the ones who don’t need it much. The first Sunday of the New Year will be observed at the King, Laskay and' Teston United Churches with the administration of the Holy Communâ€" ion We are looking forward to the same hearty co-operation as in former years. Stephen Mathers, M.A., of To- ronto will be the guest preacher. Councillor James Robs-on stated that he felt the financial statement of the municipality spoke for itself. The fine financial showing along with a tax rate lowest for some time wés gratifying in these difficult times. than ever before but not good enough yet. If we are to have the best of roads we must use the best of ma- terial he said. The speaker referred to the reduced relief costs and to the fact that although the tax collectors were not appointed this year there was an increase in' tax collections. Councillor Hosti'awser said that his first year in council had been very pleasant and he thanked the reeve and deputy and other members of council for the assistance when things were new to him. He would like to see real good material with a good percentage of stone used. The Universal Week of Prayer will be observed in King City Janu- ary 4 to 8. Services will be held in the following order: United Church, Anglican, Baptist and Evers‘ley Pres- byterian. Re-elecbed by acclamation in Vaughan Township. Ex-councillor McMurchy, former deputy-reeve Robt. Docks and C. Bakâ€" er declined a nomination for council and 'expressed satisfaction with the work of the 1936 council. BOYNTON WELDRICK Re-elected by acclamation as depâ€" utyaeeve of Vaughan Township. REEVE R. W. SCOTT KING CITY MWO0W®OOWWWW HARRY R. ROSE 40 Yonge SL, Richmond Hill Office Hoursâ€"Every Monday and 'i'hursday Afternoon and by appointment Toronto Office: 100 Adelaide Street West I am happy that the record of administration by the 1936 council received the stamp of approval of the ratepayers and along with my colleagues feel that by the results obtained we are amply repaid for our efforts.
