'On the afternoons of Thursday and Friflny, April 1 and 2. a prommme of lectures and demonsfm’cions has 'been arranged. whichwill be of spe- rcia] §ntnrest to farmers. The sneak- :ers indude George W. Mu'rr, Domin- ion Animal Husbandman, whose sub- 5ect will be “Home Grown Feeds": George Knowles of the Field Hus- bandry Division, Central Ex'ner‘Tmen- ta! Farm, who will speak on “Weeds f‘roskery, Secretary-Mani\g-or, 295 Al- .Bert St, Ottawa, and the closing- date for all entries is Wednesday, 'Mgrch 24th. The pv-‘z‘? money to be awarded will- total $1,000. Ottawa Valley Seed Fair There is every promise that the 19th Annual Ottawa. Valley Seed Fair to be held April 1 to 1987, inclus- ive in the New Marhirery Building. Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, will be even more successful than any of its predecessors. Already many entries have been received by W. M. 1:31“? that new equipment has beenl purchased. During the rush periods= of the spring and summer it will bel found handy to have the harness and ' implements in good order and ready, to use. If this examination is made and "the implements and harness repaired, it is surprising what little cost is entailed, and the impression will be 1.”. as ploughshares. harmw disks, and cultivator shovels are ofled. This layer of oil given with a brush is an mwoFenb protection against rush. Every winter an 'cxaminafion is made of the harness which is wash- ed, oiled and finally gr9ased. All broken or nnsown parts are repaired. In this way the harness is in order when the spring work begins and there is no loss of time. Care of Farm Equipment Agricultural implements and har- nesses represent a capital investment of from $80000 to $2500.00 on many farms in Eastern Canada. To secure the greatest amount of service from this equipment it is very important 'ahat it be kept in good state of re- pair. A little attention and a min~ imum annual expenditure will be found well worth while. As a rule, there is flufficient time available dur- ing the winter to examine all agri- cultural implements and put them in good' order for the spring and sum- mer operations. All bemporarv re- pairs should be gone over to make a good and lasting- repair. Care should be taken to protect all equipment by the liberal use of paint and oil for those parts that cannot be painted. 0n the Farnham Experimental Sta- tion the old- oil removed from the tractor and the automobile is kept and the parts that cannot be painted, G. In advertising, some growers and aeencies refer to bulked unseal» ed seed from a registered crop as being- reqistered seed. This is not correct and is very misleading to pur- chasers of seed. Seed is not rezis~ bored miles-s it comes from a crop which has been registered bv the C. SGA. and the seed is tagged and sealed in prover container/5 by the Dominion Seed Branch. Send from a rezisfered crop, sold’ without be- ing graded. tagged and sealed by the Dominion Seed Branch, is not regisâ€" tered seed, irrespective of whether General Pulblishing H. F. Austin, Sta L. Registered seed growers should make every effort to prevent the imnmper use of the term "registered seed.” Copper carbonafe and mercurial dusts are becoming: quite widely used. These dust commounds give veI‘v sat- isrfaotorv results ~w‘~en m'onerly apâ€" plied. Conner carbonate gives best results with Wheat. but is not so we“ suifed for use wifh hats and bar- lev. The mercurial dusts are suit- aible for the control of seed borne diseases in a wide range of seed. be- rause they control a large number of seed borne diseases besides smut. For this reason thev are to be reâ€" commended for use with crons of wheat, oats, barley. peas, beans. etc. There is some evidence to indicate that the treatment of nea seed with mercurial dusts controls to some ex- tent the» development of certain dis- eases common to peas. The effect of the treatment avpnrently results in \same increase in the number of Seedl Hme is almost with us again. Sneaking of seed time reminds us that it is necessarfxv to make Urelpara- tion to treat wheat. oats. and barley seed‘ for the control of smut. ‘ There are several goorlv materials on the market that, if properly used, will give good results. Whatever treatment is used. the results ob- tained W711 depend: upon the thor- oughness of the treatment. Thus the first important step is to learn exâ€" actly- how the treatment should be anplied and then follow exactly the method recommended. If instruc- tions as to the proper method of treatment are not followed. it is a waste of time and material. ‘ Treat Your Seed f'Vr Smut Control All grades and classes of wheat. oats and barlev. should he treated for the control of smut. This means registered seed as well as all other grades of seed. There can be no ex- ception in the mat‘er of treatment if smut is to ’be knpt undm‘ control. on F‘fidgv «oven‘ne‘.
