g Order from DAVID HILL & Co. Limited g WNWMW THURSDAY, MAY 2nd, 1940. RICHMOND HILL Bakers, Grocers and Butchers Kerr Bros. COMPLIMENTS OF ONTARIO But time also depends upon the 1longitude of a place. It is less than sixty years that Standard Time Belts have been used around the world. The necessity for them was brought about mostly by the advent of rail- roads. It was impossible to run rail- roads successfully when every little hamlet was using a different time from every other little hamlet. We may feel proud that it was in Canâ€" ada that the idea of Standard Time Zones was first proposed. But the benefit to be derived from adding Daylight Saving Time will depend partly upon whether particular city or town is situated east or west of its own standard time meridian. Places east of the time line will pro- Daylight Saving Time is one of the greatest known mass attempts at robbing Peter to pay Paul. By pummeling the sun below the hor- izon for an hour in the morning, we expect his strength to be equal to giving us an extra hour of day- light at night. The times of sunrise and sunset for any place on the earth depend on two factors â€"â€" the latitude and the longitude of the place. The length of the day at any season of the year depends (apart from irre- gularities like mountains on the earth's surface) entirely on the lati- tude. At the earth’s equator days and nights are equal at all seasons of the year, and each is twelve hours in length. At the poles of the earth day equals night also, but each is six months in length. Although here in Ontario we are almost exactly halfway between the equator and the poles, fortunately for us our days and nights are not three months in length. The longest day we can have here, that is the time between sunrise and sunset, disregarding twiâ€" light, is 15 hours and 28 minutes; while the longest night is only 15 hours and 6 minutes. Only at lati- tudes greater than 66 degrees are days and nights ever more than 24 hours in length. The greater the latitude of a place, therefore, the less desirable daylight saving time is. The nearer a place is to the equator, the more feasible it is to give one an extra hour of daylight in the evening. With the arrival this week of Day- light Saving Time, a short discus- sion of the subject from a. Lion Tam- erâ€"or is it a Lion Timerâ€"may be considered timely. Time on My Hands THE LIBERAL, RICHMOND. HILL, ONTARIO (By Heien Hogg) (By Violet Paris) “I’m going to be an actress,” she said, curls flyingâ€"eweet; “I’m notâ€"I'm going to be a motherâ€" an’ keep my babies neat.” “I’m going to be an aviatorâ€"the whole wide world to span.” “I’m going to buy a swell red truck, â€"â€"and be a garbage man.” Hop-scotch â€" hop-scotch â€"â€" to the tune of flying toes; Butcher, baker â€"â€" candlestick maker â€"wildly the chorus rose; “I’m going to be a lumber jack ~â€" chop down the highest trees.” “I’m going to be an animal trainerâ€" wild cats and lions tease," “I'm going to be a policeman â€" chase robbers who are bad,” But proudly one small redhead said, “I’m going to be like my dad.” So come Lions, Lionesses and all lovers of sport, and join with us on the opening night of the season, and I feel sure that the heat and worry of the day will be forgotten at the loveliest and coolest spot in Rich- mond Hill. It is said ,by some, that when on' becomes old, it is time enough to begin bowling, but usually such 21 statement is made by those who do not engage in any sport. Just visit the green on a hot summer’s evenâ€" ing and hear the peals of merry laughter and delight, issuing from young and old alike and you will be convinced that you are depriving yourself of a healthful recreation so accessible to you. (By Leila M. Clement) As the season for lawn bowling is approaching I would like to bring to your attention the opportunity you have of enjoying one of the most popular summer sports. Richmond Hill is very fortunate in having the finest club-hduse and bowling green in the Province of Ontario, situated amidst beautiful and attractive surroundings. But night â€" is â€"- â€"â€" so farâ€"â€"â€"â€"awayâ€"â€" FOUNDLâ€"aOne golden hour, set with sixty diamond minutes, for sleep. But as I drift back to uncon- sciousness a brief worry flits through my mind. “How will you ever get them to sleep tonight?” The world therefore, should never be subjected everywhere to Daylight Saving,r Time, as it has been to Standard Time. It is desirable only for certain regions of the earth. It was quite a shock to this particular ‘Lion Timer to see golfers knocking balls about the course at Belfast, Ireland, by daylightâ€"at half past ten at night! It is ridiculous for Belfast, situated at latitude 55 north and a half hour west from Green- wich meridian, to have Daylight Saving Time. And the converse is true in southern California. In the month of June, in Los Angeles and Hollywood it is dark at half past seven at night. One expects to en- joy a bright summer evening in that. region, but the movie magnates have been responsible for keeping Day- light Saving Time out. Long evenâ€" ings, which tempt people into their gardens, have a faculty for empty- ing movie theatres. And so, depending upon your oc- cupation, and your geographical position, you cheer or rail at Day- light Saving Time. Or possibly even depending upon the time of day. Those of us with kiddies who begin in February to wake up every morn- ing with the returning sun, getting earlier, and earlier, and earlier, any of us in that category spend the month of April wondering how we can last until DaylightISaving Time comes to fool the little darlings. Early on the first morning of the new time I waken. The clock, prop- erly set ahead the night before, points to six. I spend a moment listening for the inevitable cry of “Ma-a-ma-a”,â€"but only for a mom- ent, for I realize happily that Little Precious has been tricked into sleepâ€" ing another hour. fit most. Places which are west of the time belt, particularly many min- utes west, by adopting Daylight Saving Time increase the length of the evening out of proportion to the rest of the day, until it becomes a drag, rather than a boon. Parents with small children are among the greatest sufferers, as children have a noticeable, and not unreasonable dislike, of being put to bed when the sun is still rolling gain across the heavens. Here in Richmond Hill we are 18 minutes west of the Eastern Standard Time meridianâ€"not far enough west so that Daylight Sav- ing is a real curse, but far enough west (and north) so that it is not an unmitigated blessing.
