BROWN‘S CORNERS UNITED CHURCH The September meeting of W.M.S. was held Wednesday evening, Sept. 11 at the home of Mrs. Burr. The meeting was under the leadership of Mrs. L. A. Hood and Mrs. Patter- son later for brought in Rev. W. Marshall Ferguson, B.A‘, of Toronto preached at Newton‘brook United Church last Sunday evening in the absence of Rev. A. H. Hal- bert who was preaching at the 75th anniversary of Burns United Church at Alliston. ‘ Rev. R. G. and Mrs. HaLbert and ‘son Bill of London, Ont. were guests ‘this week at the parsonage. ' Mr. Clifford Brett left last week to take a position with the British Government as an inspector of shells. We will miss Clifford very much from our midst as he was an active worker in the Y.P.U. and in ‘the Sunday School. Mrs. Norman Reid and Mrs. Stiver were a committee appointed to ar- range for the Thank-offering meeting in November. Mrs. Patterson gave a very interesting reading on “Prop- ertyâ€"What It Is", explaining the personal properties of giving and how we can give to help the great need most. The meeting closed with the repeating of “The Call to Prayer." The Mission Band met last Sat- urday at 2.30 pm. in the 5.8. room with a large attendance. Reta Hul‘d presided and Kay Cook conducted the devotional worship service. Mrs. Hallbert and Mrs. Sampson were in charge of the study period. Margaret Adair gave a reading. Piano solos were given by Jean and Sylvia Tay- lor. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, September 28th at 2.30. The Woman’s Assoeiation met last Thursday at the church. Two quilts ‘ The Y.P.U. held their first meet- ‘ing of the Fall season last Monday evening with a good attendance. The Young People’s Union of the Subâ€" urban Area of the Toronto Centre Presbytery held a weiner and marsh- mallow roast last Wednesday even- ing and all reported a very enjoy- able evening. August 18, 1940. “Well here we are in Aldershot but that is all I can tell you, but I will tell you I certainly enjoyed myself on the trip across. It was so smooth and calm, not a rough hour on the sea and the trip down here when we landed in a Scottish port was fine. We got 5 days leave af- ter we were here 2 days and I took a trip up to the north of Scotland and oh boy did I enjoy it. Up there and in England too nearly all you can see working in the fields is wo- men, driving teams, tractors, bind- ers, drawing out manure and everyâ€" thing a man can do. The women here are certainly brave, we have to raise our hats to them. I have had a few letters from the Hill this week and glad to have them, a let- ter is welcome here at any time. Well I am liking army life fine so far. They feed us good and we have good quarters to live in and what could a man want better. Only Jerry disturbs us once in a while when he drops an egg or two nearby but otherwise it’s very quiet. Did you hear us broadcasting just as we left Canada also again when we landed at a Scottish port? You re-_ member the last time I got a hair cut we were joking among ourselves about the British Navy. But Stan after what I saw coming across, we have really got to thank God Brit- ain has a navy. Some of the boys got a little home sick but they are getting over it now and like it bet- ter.
