Campbell of Lake- fieldx, formerly of Maple. LIBERAL FILES A very pleasant time was spent at a social in the Patterson church last Friday evening. Twenty-two from this village went out in Mr. Gaxby’s pleasure van, and about as many more on wheels and. other ways. The tea was served in the west wing of the church after which a short but interesting program was given, the chair being occupied- by Rev. N. Wellwood. The receipts a- mounted to about $18.00. Many complimentary remarks were heard Friday evening in reference to the new piano used for the first time at the Banquet and Entertain- ment in connection with the Epworth League. The new insorument is a “MadMillan” manufactured by Gourâ€" ley, Winter & Leaming, Toronto, and was purchased for the League, through Mr. W. A. Wright, the agent here. The biano has a fine tone and plenty of volume. From our Issue of October 6, 1910 Mr. D. Sloan after faithful ser- vice as head miller at L. Innes & Sons flour and: chopping mill, left on Tuesday to join his family in To- ronto where they moved a few months ago. Dr. Langstafif placed the YOung’ People’s Guild of the Preshyterian Church under great olbligation by his interesting and informing lecture given on last Friday evening. The; audience was up to the most: sanguine expectations in size, and1 humorous touch-es of the Doctor's in? troduction not only put the audience in a pleased mood for the after and more serious facts presented. but led some of his friends to think that he should write a 'book if he could continue to draw upon so large a fund of humour. The Doctor who is also possessed of a rare facility of expressions adopted himself to 'his audience "by an unique abandon- ment of technical phraseology, which is in itself not an easy thing to do. The lecture was also illustrated 'by slides which were prepared for the occasion, and Mr. George S. Sims operated the lantern with his usual efficiency. The Sunday School Or- chestra also contributed materially to the program. When the lecture was concluded the audience enthusi- astically supported) the vote of ap- preciation which was moved by Mr. Pratt and second-ed by Mr. Cowie. Rev. Dr. Carmichael of St. An- drew’s Presbyterian Church, King, completes fifty years of ministry in that charge. The Toronto Presby- tery propose to hold a day‘s cele- ‘bration to mark the occasion. A number of the local telephones were burned. out during the electri- cal storm Friday evening, and oth- ers were put out of (business the next day by the high wind. May the great God whom I wor- ship grant to my country, and for the benefit of Europe in general, a great and glorious victory; and may no misconduct in any one tarnish it; and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature in the British fleet! For myself indvidu- ally, I commit my life to Him that made me; and may His blessing alight on my endeavors for serving my country faithfully! To Him I resign myself and the just cause which is entrusted to ‘me to defend. Amen, Amen, Amen. Negotiations have been completed to enlarge the Reforestation tract at Vivian in W'hitchurchltownship by fifty acres. About 150,000 trees will be planted. “Who’s that awful woman over “there who keeps talking?” “My wife." “So sorry. My mistake." Aurora United Church Women’s Association have hit on a novel idea of raising money. On Tuesday they held an “BMAGINARY BAZAAR”. Memlbers were asked. to put in an envelope an amount equal to what they would give and buy at a bazaar. A goodly sum was realized, the memlbers saved a lot of work, and it cost the memlbers no more. “I sold my stove the night the paper came out," reported a satisâ€" fied user of The Liberal classified. advertising columns last week. She added! “I could have sold a dozen.” These small ads are ready to go to work for you too any time. They do a good jclb and the cost is small. East York Plowing- Match will be held on Wednesday, November 6th. Some thieving has been reported! in Markham township. Constable Gayman has been investigating the theft of $50 worth of tools from Clark Prentice at Milliken, a quantâ€" ity of gasoline from C. Denlby on the 5th con., some gas from Stiver Bros. and some chickens from Brown's Hatchery at Unionville. “Jush thought I’d bring your torsh back, 0’ man," he hiccoughed. “I found my way home with it pel'fl’y.” The editor of a lively little jour- nal in Eatonville was much annoyed by the custom of a rival editor who was always “stopping the press” in order to insert a piece of late news. It seems that scarcely a day passed‘ that the rival did not state “we stop the press to announce" that someone had died, someone had been born, lost money, been arrested, etc. Finally, this sort of thing got on the nerves of the editor first men- tioned, so he inserted on the first Keep your chin up ways be an England. page of his sheet one day, the fol- lowing: “We stop the press to announce that there is no news of sufficient importance to justify us in stopping the press.
