PROTEST ACTION OF COUN- CIL RE PROPOSED MLN- ,‘ ICIPAL OFFICE The Literal. Richmond Hill. Ontario. Dear Sirs:â€"â€" “'0 will appreciate it very much if you will give the following letter space in your paper this week. To the Ratepayers of Markham THE LIBERAL, RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO RATEPAYERS' Township:â€" “7c have protested the recent move of the Markham Township Council' in purchasing the “'Lunau" house as; a Township office on the following grounds. In order that the Council may know how the ratepayers feel on the matter we ask that the rate- payers advise your local council member of their vieWs on this mat- ter. If you favor it tell him so, if you do not be sure to tell him also. Here are our reasons:â€" 1. It is not necessary to have two Township buildings. We already own the Hall at a cost of between $3000 and 31000. It. means double expense in upkeep. heating. caretaking, etc. 2. The “Lunau” house is not a suitable building. It is too small, has no land necessary to take care of any future additions that may be necessary. The cellar is only under part of the house, there is no furnace or sanitary conveniences. 3. The Council is setting a had exâ€" ample in starting this expenditure during the 4th year of the war. We are asked to forego all unnecessary expenses of this kind. ' We recommend the following as an alternative course:â€" 1. That the old Township records be filed and packed in boxes and stored in a fireproof place. 2. That the Township Office pro- ject be shelved until after the war when there will be a real need to give employment to returning sol- diers and munition workers. 3. That when the project. is again contemplated every effort be made to build suitable Township offices in connection with the present Townâ€" ship Hall. Then there would be one heating plant, one caretaker, one up- keep. Yours sincerely, JNO. E. BROWN E. J. STIVER CLARK YOUNG. The farâ€" mers, young and old are urged to get their chores done up early and be at the classes by 10 am. as the programme must start on time to get all the work covered in the two days. According to W. M. Cockburn who is organizing the work in York County a very competent staff of experienced farm machinery instruc- tors will demonstrate the repairing ,_,. ._.. < (o I” and adjustment of mowers, plows, binders, knottervs, tractors, rope splicing and repairing, slides show- ing new and novel labour saving de- vices. NEW YEAR’S NIGHT DANCE AT MAPLE Carl Black's orchestra will provide the music at the annual New Year’s dance at Maple Concert Hall, Fri- day evening, January lst. Whether ratepayers are not inter- ested, or whether they are satisfied with the work of civic bodies is re- flected somewhat in the reports from various sections of the province in respect to civic nomination meetings and elections, for acclamations seem to be the rule, rather than the exâ€" ceptior. Perhaps it is a combina- tion of disinterest and satisfaction which accounts for the majority of civic acclamations. DANCE AT VELLORE CHRISTMAS NIGHT A dance will be held in the Me- morial Hall, Vellore, Friday evening, December 25th, sponsored by the Hall Committee. There will be mod- em and old time dancing commenc- ing at 8.30 pm. with Art West’s Orchestra providing the music and Ernie Evans as floor manager.
