Zone 8-288 (Toronto Subscribers Dial “Operator’Lâ€"Message Charge) Dr. Wallace has also written sev- eral books for adults such as “I Be- lieve In People”, “Stars in the Sky”, “The Faith of Morn”, and “The Silâ€" ver Lining”. One of his pet theories is that in the life of every boy there comes a time when all he needs is a little push in one direction, or the other. Dr. Wallace set about giving: that push in the right direction through terse, stimulating, biographical sketâ€" ches of real boys who had made good, and even become famOus, in different fields of endeavour, in spite of difficulties and disabilities. These stories first published in “The Canadian Boy” an influential church paper (of which Dr. Wallace later became editor) were so well receiv- ed that they were soon reprinted in book form under the name “Stories of Grit". Other volumes followed. among them “Overcoming Handi- caps”, “Adventures in the Air”, and “‘Heroes of Peace”. Some of these books have been translated into Chinese,'Japanese, Korean, Hindu- stani, Portuguese, and braille and more than a million copies have been sold all over the world. _ Undoubtedly the courage and faith which permeate all his stories must have helped, and hastened, his re- turn to normal health. Today no one would think of illness in con- 9-10 am. BOOKS IN SEVEN LANGUAGES TOTAL A MILLION COPlES SOLD _When the Reverend Archer Wall- ace moved to the village of Maple in 1942 his reputation as the author of many worthwhile books for boys was already firmly established. Probably few of his country neigh- bours realize that the story of how he attained that reputation is as in< spiring as any that he has written about other people. For, when Dr. Wallace began his career as an au- thor he was not sitting comfortably at a desk, but confined to bed with a serious breakdown in health, and facing the grave possibility, that, though still a young man, he might never be able to resume his minis- terial duties. Instead of giving in to self pity and despair be cast about for some way in which to use his active mind, and enforced leisure. Writing seemed to be the answer, especially writing for the teen age youth whose welfare was so close to his heart. He also began to work among teen age boys, and one trait which speedily won their con~ fidence, was his love of all kinds of clean sport. In England he had been a soccer player. In Canada he became a hockey enthusiast, and an interested follower of many other games. 1Dr. Wallace holds the degree of M.A. from the University of West'â€" ern Ontario, and of DB. from Vic- toria College, Toronto. Though he occupies the pulpit now only as guest preacher, it would be difficult to estimate the great and far-reach- ing influence of this man who re- ceives letters of appreciation from boys the world over, who have found help and encturagement in his books. RICHMOND HILL FARMERS SUPPLY DR. ARCHER WALLACE nection with this busy cleric who commutes several times each week to his office in Toronto. For the past twenty-five years Dr. Wallace has been editor of “Onward”, a weekly paper with a circulatiOn of over one hundred thousand copies. Besides this he recently placed his 23rd book, “In Spite of All”, in the hands of the publishers, and in addi- tion he has been most generous with his time. In‘ response to requests from various societies in this dis.- trict he has given a number of very interesting (and Witty) illustrated lectures which have been thorougth enjoyed by all 'present. ' Dr. Wallace was born in England of Scottish parents, and came to Newfoundland as a young: Methodist probationer. During three- years spent there in the llttle fishing vill- age of Bay St. George, and later in the then poor and struggling Earlsâ€" court, Toronto (where he was asso- ciated \vg'th the Rev. Peter Bryce), he developed that warm understand- ing of people and their problems which has earned him the title of The now aupplrnu‘nl fl and mineral contentâ€" And they‘ll stay healthy looâ€" Blalchford’s Chick Starter keeps ’cm healthyâ€"much them grow fasterâ€"assures "italilyâ€"zlud pays Inc bigger dividends l [\OW- Siren/JIM PRATT, Manager ‘elephon'e 139 THE LIBERAL, RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO m”.
