HOUSE Ken Love AUCTIONEER Ontario Toronto Those of you who missed seeing the play put on by the ladies of our Institutes will have an opportunity to see it at one of the following plat:- es in the near future: Unionville. April 30th; Victoria Square, Wednes- day May 5th and Melville on Friday, May 14th. Mr. Alex Burns has returned from a business trip which took him across Canada to‘ Vancouver with stops at various places along the route. Mrs. E. Fraser is visiting at the lunar”) nf hPI‘ daughter. Mrs. “1'. Mrs. E. Fraser is visiting 2 home of her daughter, Mrs Craig. An impromptu debate was given at the young people's Union on Sunâ€" (lay evening". The subject, “Resolved that life in the present is better than life was in the past." The affirma- tive Miss Francis Baher and Miss Vicky Johnston argued very cleverly and the negative Mrs. S. E. English and Mrs. W. Craig did their best. The conclusion arrived at by the youthful audience was that regard- less of how the debate went. they, for their part, preferred to live in the present. Convenors for the bazaar, which the Harmony Club of Brown’s Cor- ners Church will hold in the fall, are as follows: Arprone, Mrs. W. Baker; Candy and Fish Pond, Miss E. Boyn- ton; Home‘Baking, Mrs; 0. Brooks; Baby Booth, Mrs. N. Reid; Plants a'nd Vegetables, Mrs. Jones; Tea, Mrs. Neson; White Elephant, Mrs. S. English; Miscellaneous, Mrs. W. Craig. These convenors will get in touch with their committees in the near future. The beautiful Easter story as told by Nellie. McClung formed the back- ground for the April meeting of the W.M.S. which met at the‘ home or" Mrs. D. Hood. Members of the choir gave a fine chorus of “'In Joseph's Lovely Garden.” The Scripture was read by Mrs. W. Speare. Mrs. W. Craig gave the study book and talk- ed of the “World’s Imperishable Treasure" the Bible and told of the miracle of its survival down through the centuries. Miss Dorothy Hood favoured with a lovely piano solo. Lunch was served by the hostesses Mrs. Hood, Mrs. Wm. Rodick and Mrs. J. Rodick. { LOW cosr 1 PROTECTION FOR INDIVIDUALS, I FA M I LY ‘ GROUPS HOSPITALIZATION 1k MEDICAL and INCOME PROTECTION SAND â€"â€" GRAVEL CRUSHED STONE BUTTONVILLE For complete information on a plan suited to your partiâ€" cular needs, consult your Mutual Benefit representa- tive. HAMM, Proprietress Groceries Fruits Meats Miscellaneous Lines Willowdale Meeting Discusses Subject of TranSpertation Councillor F. W. Bartrem, K.C. grave a short talk on North Yonge St. transportation at a. meeting of the Homestead Ratepayers’ Associaâ€" tion in the Yonge St. School, VVilv lowdale. “Speaking for the township concil, we are not_t1‘ying to sell you anything," he said. “The township council acts as YOPI‘ agent and the type of transportation is going to be put to you by Way of a plebiscite. Therefore, you people will have the say as to whether you have single track, double track, trackless trolleys or Diesel buses." . The members disqussed various phases of transportation. Mr. Bart- rem was requestedfio inquire as to the cost of replacing the two swit- ches. at stops '5 and 8 that were re- moved a few yeal‘S ago and also the cost of installing \a switch between Finch and Steele? Ave. It was the opinion of the maJority attending the meeting, that with these swiches in place, a ten minute radial service would be possiple. lift much less cost; Many desired a through service of the city cars, Wlthout having to change at the city limits. One rate- payer pointed out that city street cars can travel on this line as he had gone from downtown Toronto to Wilcox Lake stop on a picnic, special city car. He also said it would take twenty buses to Operate this line in compam'ison to seven radials as at preset. __A,, ‘A‘ A‘.«L LL. p ...... ‘L. E. Parker suggested that the ratepayers’ assocmtion and individ- ual members Should write their opinâ€" ions on transportation to the corres- poding secretary ('E. L. H. Smith, box 5, Northmout PD.) of the North York Central Community Council, and also urge the community council to hold a public meeting to discuss transportation problems before the plebiscite at which time special speak- ers could be invited to discuss all angles, e.g. a member of the munici- pal council, a T.T.C. representative, a railway man, a lawyer and a ratepay- er. On motion to this effect was un- animously carried. It was felt that opinions should be expressed in open rather than i private. Concern was expressed over the cost of a bus servrce, having in mind the cost of the buses operated during rush hours a year ago. Either the extra cost would be made up in high- er taxes, or there was danger of higher fares. In this connection, W. W. Allison quoted passeger tariff re- vision No. 9, page 23, or route No. 10 of the Gray Coach Lines for one day fare, approved by the board of trans- pont commissioners, from the city limits to stop 4â€"20c; 6-â€"2ac.; 8â€"25c 11â€"30c.; 16â€"350.; 19â€"40c.; 25â€"45c. He admitted that the Gray Coaeh L.ne does not stop at present betWeen the city limits and Elgin Mills, but the rates quoted are legal if they de~ sire to give that type of service in this area. There has been no assur- ance that the fares would not be raised. 1 _ - J. G. Orr remarked “There was no serious coniplain't“'about the line unv til the winter the T.T.C. removed the switches.” It was agreed that with a few more cars and the extra swit- ches and with improved management as to time schedules and destinations. a much more satisfactory service couldbe made. It was noticeable that not onerate- payer spoke in favour of a bus ser- vice. T. E. Wiltshire, trustee of Mit- chell Field, explained that work was being delayed beyond the control of the North York Lions Club due to legal technicalties. â€"-- . . x , A “A ",3... -V-.... J. Warack, delegate to the com- munity council, outlined the proposed tubercolosis survey and on motion of T. E. Wiltshire, a motion was passed favouring the survey and promising support. Hurry- .. A vote of thanks to the speakers was moved by J. Warragk._ W'fhéwfir'eEiazéniJ Mrs. H. B. Wilkin- son, was in the chair. God gave all men all earth to love, But since our hearts are small, Ordained for each one spot should prove Beloved over all. â€"â€" Kipling ‘Tis no wonder,‘sayus one of the anu ients, that chace has so great a do- miion over us, since it is by chance we live. â€"Montaigne.
