He began to teach in the local Sunday School, to distribute tracts from door to door. But that which aroused interest in all who knew him, was his intellectual awakening. He was no longer slow and backward. Speaking of this per- iod of his life, Henry Ward Beecher said: “When religion came to Joseph Parker, every bell in his belfry be- gan to ring.” MAPLE TIN SMITH & PLUMBING SUPPLY While in Hexham, I remembered that it was the birthplace of the great Doctor Joseph Parker. He built the City Temple and was its minister for thirty-four years and exercised a ministry remarkable for its spiritual and intellectual quali- ties. He was 'also the author of for- ty volumes; every one of them thoughtful and stimulating. Yet when Parker was a lad, running ar- ound the streets of Hexham, he was considered below average in intell- igence, He played with boys young- er than himself and was dull and slow to learn. The only thing he ap- pears to have excelled in was play- ing marbles. It seemed as if every faculty in the boy had been sleeping and now awoke; memory, imagination, humor, Gurney Gas Ranges for Essotane Furnaces â€" Air Conditioning Pressure Systems of Hadrian’s wall, built in the year 12-0 AD, The Roman Emperor built that wall to keep the Scotch out. One wonders why any man would want to shut out the Scotch! While in Hexham-. I remembered spent a (lay in Hexham, a very old tdwn. near the border of Scotland. IN THE MATTER of the Estate of INA LEVINA‘BOWES, late of the Village of King, in the County of York, Widow, deceased. AL‘L PERSONS having any claim jagainst the late Ina Levina Bowes who died on or about the 27th day of April 1949, or against her Estate, are required to send particulars of their claim to the undersigned on 01' before the 23rd day of July 1949 af- ter which date the assets of the Es- tate will be distributed, having re- gard only to those claims of which notice shall then have been received. The wild turkey was an original inhabitant of the Province and be- came extinct here about 50 years ago. A recent article in the Departmental magazine, “Sylva”, pointed out that although the southern areas that are climatically suited to wild turkeys are now too well cleared ever to proâ€" vide wild turkeys for sport, there are still spots where a few could be main- tained as natural~attractions, for old times’ sake. The birds released in Lambton County are not expected to increase greatly, but it is hoped that they will maintain themselves. The Department of Lands and For- ests announces that May 9th, 1949, may be marked down by sportsmen and naturalists as the date of the re- turn of the wild turkey to Ontario. On that date four hens and two toms were released in LamIbton County. The birds were secured from Pennsyl- vania through the kind co-operation of the Pennsylvania Game Commis- sion. Wild Turkey Returns To Original Habitat Followers of Karl Marx so fre- quently refer to religion as an “op- iate”, that theirpropaganda has led lsome to think that religion has only :a restraining influence upon its folâ€" lowers. It is true that it restrains people from evil; from that which would injure them, 'but to think of religion primarily as restraint is to put the cart before the horse. Relig- ion stimulates and inspires as it did 'in the case of young Parker. Those who regard religion as a “wet blanket” or “a skeleton at the feast of life,” have accepted what is really a travesty; a caricature of re- ligion. Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.” True religion makes a man, but more of a :man, as one leader puts it: “It means not the pushing in of the orâ€" gan stops and shutting off the mus- ic, but the drawing of every stop that the ,music may swell forth in all its rich and full-voiced harmonies.” God calls upon men and women to deny themselves but that is Only that they may enter into a larger, fuller” richer life. As I think of the thou- sands of young Canadians in our schools and colleges, I know that re- ligion can bring to them, as it brought to Joseph Parker, 3. more abundant life. them to memory. No one who knew him as a boy, would think it possible that the ap- parently dull lad would develop into one of the most forceful personalities of his generation, or that for thirty years, he would conduct a noon-day service each Thursday with an atten- dance seldom less than a thousand, and often twice as large. It was not unusual to find twenty members of the House of Commons present at these services. . Our quotation to-day is by Kingsley: “What I want is possess religion, but to have ion that shall possess me.” all came to life. It was difficult then for a poor boy to get an educa- tion or to buy books. He left school at a very early age, but- by dint of hard study made up for it. He taught himself shorthand; a rare accomp- lishment in those days. He cut pieces out of newspapers, pinned them to his bedroom wall and committed them to memorv.
