POSTS, POLES ‘2nd Concession Whitchurch 1V2 miles north of Lake Wilcox On one occasion when Robert Lou- is Stevenson was engaged in writing a book he came to a place where he felt unable to continue. So far the story had moved freely and interest was intense, but suddenly ideas ceas- ed, and in despair he said: “How shall I keep up the pitch?“ That is a mood which must be common to many creative workers in different spheres. One reads Tennyson’s “In Memoriam,” the whole of which seems to flow with perfect grace and ease, yet, if the truth were known, doubtless there were days when the poet could not create, when the muse seemed to have forsaken him and he felt unable to write another line. We talk of those who carry on with their backs to the wall and there are many such. Troubles, we say, never come singly and the astonishing thing is that some people are able to be so brave in face of circumstances which threaten‘ to crush their spir- its completely. The Apostle Paul came to such a pass on at least one occasion, and probably on many others.- He had carried on with passionate earnest- ness for years; in spite of bitter and determined opposition he had preach- ed and organized churches with a restless energy which has never been excelled. Then we find him asking, “Who is sufficient for all these things?” Was he perplexed and baf- fled at the frustration of cherished plans? Is there a note of discour- agement in his query, a fear of threatened failure? We do not know, but we esteem him none the less be- cause he did find it difficult to keep up the pitch. ' Life may be compared to a climb uphill, and when things become too easy it may be well to ask if the as- cent is being‘ continued. There is no scriptural promise that life will ever become a primrose path. God does not bribe people into His service by promising them exemption from sorrow, disappointment and difficul- ty. Religion is not an insurance pol- icy against sickness and loss and mis- fortune. Often we have heard Chris- tian people say with resentment af- ter some trying experience. “Why sh_ould this thing have happened to OO“..MMMO¢O”O“O”O 06609609990990. 9.0%... Rumours to the effect that he sold the Richmond Hill Dairy without foundation, C. 0. Waters informed the Liberal. Ill! ElllllIllIIlll Dairy Is Not Sold C. 0. Waters Says The Au'gust meeting will be at the home of Mrs. E. Bryson. We are having a bazaar again in the fall, so come to the next meeting, ladies, prepared to make definite plans. Mrs. At the close of the meeting refresh- ments were served by hostess and committee. E. Witherspoon and Miss A. Kerr are in charge of a quilt for a draw. Mrs. Roy Peelar outlined the man- ufacture of paraffin wax at Agin- court. The musical part of the program was enjoyed very much. "Accom- panied by Miss Annie Kerr, Mrs. Humphrey and Mrs. Hutcheson sang two duets “ Aprayer for Our Coun- try” and “God of Our Fathers.” Syl- via Kerr favoured with two piano solos â€" “Minuet in D Minor” and “La Avalénche.” A short time was spent in community singing. In keeping with the topic, Miss Annie Kerr conducted a c0ntest nam- ing products from advertising clip- pings. The 1'011 call had previously been answered by a slogan from an advertisement. me?" There is more than chagrin expressed in those words; there is ,a protest that somehow God has not kept faith, that a bargain has not been lived up to. Readers of Victor Hug-0’s novel, “Les Miserables” will remember the moving scene when the convict, Jean Valjean, makes a daring dash for lib~ erty and turns down a dark street in Paris, thinking he sees a way of escape. But it turns out to be a blind alley with a high forbidding stone wall at the end. The fugitive feels like a trapped animal, without any way of escape. There are few people who have not known at least something of that mood. od saves his people not from trouble, but in trouble. In a recent book Professor John Macmurray says:“Religion delivers us from fear but not from the things that we are afraid of.” That is worth remem- bering. The promise God makes to His people is not to deliver people from trouble, but to sustain in the hours of severe trial: “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kind- le upon thee.” (Isaiah 43:2). “When through the deep waters I call, thee to go, The rivers of woe shall not thee over- flow; For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless, And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. When through fiery trials, thy path- way shall lie, My gracefall sufficient, shall be thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, and thy gold refine.” No life has ever been lived with- out some sense of strain; fears that the pitch could not be sustained. It is not weakness which causes people to feel that way, for the strongest and best have known that feeling. But we are not alone in this strug- gle. There is a great “Freemason- ry of sufferers.” There have been millions who felt like giving up but who continued, and their courage and fortitude is an inspiration to all of us. Mrs. E. Bryson read a paper on the m“otto. Everyone at some time is given an opportunity to advance. We should seize these opportunities and use them wisely. The most satâ€" isfying results come from one’s own efforts. Later Mrs. Bryson present- ed the topic mentioning industries of weaving, tanning and milling of years ago in Woodbridge district. This was followed by a summing up of all Canadian Industries of the present day across Canada. There are four outstanding essentials for successful industry â€" raw.\material, capital, labour and management. To-day’s quotation is from an ad- dress by Dr. George Jackson: “Sor- row is God speaking with emphasis.” The July meeting of Vellore Sr. Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs. A. Cameron. The topic was Canadian Industry and the motto “The doors of oppor- tunity are marked Push and Pull.” Phone 455W â€" 455.] Toronto Head Office 1172 Ba AFTERNMN DR.AREHER”WALLAEE REAL ESTA TE VELLORE ieorge rincess has are has éooowwmonoo OOOOOOOOOOQOMOOQOOOOOOOO06.600060: PHONE â€" THORNHILL 256W i - F I IHIIIIIIIIHIEEIIEHHIIEHIIIIIIIIIIE‘ I Distributors of Bottled Gas YONGE ST.
