West NORTHERN SERVICES PLAN Arrangements to eliminate somewhat dangerous step in south sidewalk leading to school were made. A plan by which members of the Northwest Territories and Yukon Services ,of the Department of Mires and Resources would spend regular alternate periods of ser- vice in the North and in Ottawa is now under consideration by de- partmemtal officials and the Civil Service Commission. Such'an ar- rangement would enable those in the northern service to learn of field problems firsthand. Converse- ly, officers returning to the north following a period at head office would do so with a knowledge of the way in which field conditions are affected by developments in Ottawa. HYDRO DEVELOPMENTS Construction of hydroâ€"electric developments throughout Canada went forward vigorously during 1948 according to the Dominion Water and Power Bureau. Install- ed capacity was increaséd by 440,- 095 h.p. The annual pre-war av- erage increase was about 300,000 h.p. A Product d Gown! Melon the the The new machine, produced by a Toronto firm, is provided with a mowing knife and also a pickup attachment so that a farmer may cut his hay in the field with the machine and process it all in the one operation, or he can cut it with the mower and pick it up with the pick-up attachment. The same machine is also equipped with a corn cutting attachment. Waste Washed Out Miss Yorke said that this is a good time of the year for food. We have just celebrated our Thanksgiving and it doesn’t do anyone any harm to sit down and count your blessings. Canada is in a very fortunate situation as we could actually support our- selves with the food we grow. It is also a very colorful time for food and Miss Yorke» gave sug- gestions for using some of these foods for table decorations. When entertaining we should try to find something that isn’t ordin- ary run of the mill food. We should use more inexpensive cuts of meat and use imagination in cooking and fiavouring. In fact nearly everyone can cook a por- terhouse steak. But it takes a clever cook to make a good stew. QWOWOMMOO”OO”WWNOO‘ “Canned grass," cattle feeding sensation in Canada. and the Un- ited States, is scheduled for dis- play and lengthy discussion at the Royal Winter Fair which opens in Toronto November 15. The latest machine method of providing for forage crops from the time they are cut until the farmer forks them out of the silo in winter time will be shown. Harvesting hay- at the correct stage of growth produces more succulent feed, it is claimed, and provides a greater percentage of protein, carotene and other val- uable nutrients. Using a new for- age clipper, the farmer in one trip across a field may cut, chop and load green bay in one operation. Mowing, raking, stacking and hand pitching are eliminated. She also spoke ‘of the new ser- vice being rendered by T.C.A. in New Methods Will Eliminate Many Hay-making Operations Raise Food Values Greatly Miss Elizabeth Yorke, Menu Ad- visor for the Hostess Shop, T. Eaton Co. Ltd., was the guest speaker at the October meeting of the Women’s Institute, taking as her subject “A New Look in Foods." She always thinks of the Women‘s Institute members as friends because her mother had been president of a Women’s In- stitute in Wales when she was young. Extensive tests carried out in Canada» and the United States have shown that when a farmer climbs into his haymow in the win- ter time and lifts a forkful of al- falfa, he is holding from 30 to 50 percent less food value than the Richmond Hill Women’s Institute SELLING YOUR HOME ? Feed- ing grasses and legumes as hay is believed one of the most appalling wastes in farming. The cure, agricultural experts claim‘ is simple: The farmer may now cut his hay while it is still kneeâ€"high grass." rich in protein and carotene; chop it fine while it is still moist; can it in a silo or pit. Preserved in its own juices, the canned grass is finally fed with its full complement of vitamins and proteins. Any cutting of grass can be made into good silage providing it is green enough to pack, it is claimed. Offer Recommendations For best results use a. 60-40 mix of grasses and legumes, timothy and red clover; alfalfa and brome; soybeans and millet or even weeds and timothy. Mow the grasses right after the heads have emerg- ed; alfalfa in early bloom; clover half to full bloom; cereals, pre- bloom to early dough. Recommended to farmers at the Royal will be the following rules: Winnow and let the sun wilt out to a moisture content of 62 to 68 per cent. Run the moist grass through an ensilage chopper, set to cut in 1-4 inch lengths. Blow the graSS into the silo and then t0p it off with a cork of the highest moisture grass procurable. The “cork” reduces moisture loss from the stored forage and gives the air no chance to entel. bringingKfresh fish to Toronto from the Atlantic Coast. Fish caught one day is on sale the next day in Toronto. Kippers, crab and filleted fish were given to three lucky winners by Miss Yorke. ' Committees were appoined for the Card Party to be held in the High School Gym on Friday, No- vember 4. The proceeds are to be used to purchase chairs for the new room. It was also decided to restrict the use of the room to Women’s organizations. The roll call was answered by “A person I am thankful to have known.” “A good neighbour wherever I have lived,” was one member’s answer. The members of Richmond Hill Institute visited with the mem- bers of Victoria Square Institute who were our guests during the social halfâ€"hour following the meeting, Mrs. W. Mylks and Mrs. K. Blanchard pouring tea and Mrs. R. Ende'an, Mrs. H. Sander- son, Mrs. R. Boyle and Mrs. R. Cooper being the hostesses.
