Langstaff residents ,who live west of Yonge Street might like to mark the ï¬rst Thurs- day in each month as a date to keep open for these meetings, un- til such time as they form their own group. ' East Vaugh With radio playing a more and more important part in furthering the education 'of adults as well as children, perhaps all of us would be more anxious to be on the re- ceiving end if we were aware that the Ontario Department of Educa‘ tion now spends $19,000 "a year on School Broadcasts. The Depart- ment‘s hope is that parents and children, will listen to the pro~ grammes, will discuss them when they are together, and will develop mutual interests, which seem all too few in this day and age. Radio and the Taxpayer Fenwick, Director of Music for the Ontario Department of Education, conducted the ï¬rst weekly session on “Elementary Music in the Schools". He had as his guest, Edmond Hockridge, wellâ€"known Canadian baritone, whose rehear- sals local ex-service personnel pro- bably, watched many times during the war, in the same audiences as the Worsdale family, had they but known it. The BBC. studio in Criterion Theatre on London’s Re- gent Street, just off Piccadilly, used to be packed most Saturday afternoons, come “doodle-bug†or those invisible devile the V-‘2’s and many a Canuck was cheered by the knowledge that what he was witnessing and listening to would be heard by the folks back home in a few hours time. It seemed a natural consequence that “Ted‘ Hockridge,†as he was known .then, besides becoming one of the most popular voices in Britain, should marry an attractive and wealthy Englishagirl. Further, it sounded perfectly natural to hear him tell- ing the school children, by way of introduction to his singing “Chris- topher Robin and the Changing of the Guardâ€, of his taking his small son to Buckingham Palace last summer and of taking a ï¬lm, him- self, of that famous event. The music lesson included a few facts about the life of Mozart, the “Won- der Child,†called such because he could do things with music that even grown-ups ï¬nd difficult. Sub- tly, Mr. Fenwick aroused the child- ren’s interest for the piano solo which was coming by saying, “As you will probably hear Mozart’s music as long as you live, it would be a good thing for you to listen to some of it now." ,Then foilow- ed Mozart’s “Turkish Marchâ€, familiar to most people by its melâ€" ody if not by its title. The lesson concluded with the pupils being in- vited to do stationary marching to a ‘song, led by Mr. Hockridge, “Tramp, tramp, tramp, around the schoolroom,†and the mental pic- ture conjured up was of children all over Ontario singing and mark- ing time to a rousing march. The morning series, from 9.45 to 10.15 week days, sometimes cover two subjects, as was the case ’on Monday of this week. Mr. G. Roy over CJBC at 8.00 pm. EST. It is a dramatic radio series about human beings and their relation- ship with one another. Thousands of Canadians formed themselves into groups last season to listen to and discuss these broadcasts. Stu- dy bulletins for the use of listen- ing groups may be obtained free of charge by writing to Miss Har- riett E. Carr, Community Pro- grammes, Department of Educa- tion, 206 Huron Street, Toronto. The second subject of the broad- cast was aimed at grades 7 to 10, and commenced the B.B.C. “Science and Everyday†talks, “Water†be- ing the speciï¬c topic. Just how our intricate way of livin’g depends on water was made very evident and the lecture by an English pro- fessor contained much of the 'gen- eral knowledge without which a formal education alone does not seem to ï¬t young people to enter the business world_ “In Search of Ourselves" bégins again next Tuesday, January 17. Mills write-ups on local hockey because you may or may not have realized that the RiLh-mond Hill Young Canadians (Midget) includes our own Morty Charles, Don Watt and Tommy White. The team played its ï¬rst game on Saturday against New- market and our lads won, with the score 7 to 3. 0f the 7 goals, Morty got 2, Tom 1 and Don 1. The boys feel they had the ad- vantage in size an~ speed but give Newmarket credit for their scien- tiï¬c plays, and hope Mr.‘Mills can arrange for an artiï¬cial ice surface so they can get in some practice. Their next game is against Stoufl’ville at Richmond Hill on Friday, January 13, at 8 pm. Local hockey enthusiasts will no doubt be out in full force. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Maddocks, and their daughter, Mary, who live at the corner of the No. 7 Highway and Essex Avenue, are still at home and suffering the after-effects of the accident in which they were involved during the New Year’s holiday. They had been stopped for abOut ï¬ve minutes at the end of a long line of stationary traffic on Hogg’s Hollow Hill, when another car’s brakes failed to stop it after ac- celerating to avoid one which was waiting to enter Yonge Street; the result was most unpleasant for the' Maddocks and we hope to hear good news of their" progress very soon. Atom Ships Forecast Warships of world fleets are now being specially designed for speci- ï¬c roles in countering potential enemy types, says the latest issue of “Janes Fighting Ships.†In the next few years it predicts, the world will see revolutionary new fleets with atomic bomb carriers, guided missile control ships, anti- submarine cruisers, rocket-flying destroyers, and ships driven by gas turbine, “Where prlces meet purses" -â€" in the classiï¬ed ad. section.
