Jarrett on “Little Places.” We find that in the small school, the little church and community such as ours, we can find more true friends, more pleasure and happiness than is found in larger centres, it em- phasized. With Mrs. E. Kellam as accompanist, community singing was enjoyed. At the close of the meeting lunch was served by the hostess and com- mittee in charge. The motto, “You have to do your own growing no matter how tall your grandfather was,” was given {by Mrs. J. Murray. Mrs. J. Kyle gave an interesting paper on “Thoughts for the year.” She said “We think back over what has hapfiened in the past year. We found many ‘Uhlings that caused grief or sadness â€" things we wish- ed had not happened. Life can foe pleasant too according to what we make it. Many of us borrow trouble. If we could only be wise enough and trusting enough to do our best and not worry how differ- ent .things would be for us and those around us. Let us have faith in others as well as ourselves. It is not for our good that we know what is to be ours." Mrs. F. Oliver was hostess on January 9 to a meeting of Vellore Senior Institute members. Many “thank you” letters for Christmas and sick treats were read. It was unanimously decided to send one- half the scholarship fund this year. The roll call â€" “Name the first Sunday School you attended and the Superintendent” was well res- ponded to. The topic of the day was Histor- ical Research. Mrs. Jas. Brownlee read a very interesting paper perâ€" taining to “York County in Reâ€" view” tracing its growth through the years giving the formation of different townships. The Town- ship of Etob‘icoke was organized in 1792 with an area of 27,956 acres. Other incorporated municipalities have ‘been established since such as New Toronto, Long Branch, Mimico and Islington. Markham, with its area of 67,696 acres was organized in 1792 also. The Township of Vaughan was opened for settle- ment and named after Benjamin Vaughan. Its area is 67,007 acres. Quakers from Pennsylvania were among its first settlers. The first ploughing match in Canada was held in the Township of Scarbor- ougih on the farm of Mr. Stocbo.
