Continual enorts are being made to obtain more Public Health Nurses to bring our staff up to reasonable strength, and the vacancy left by Mrs. Gib- son will be ï¬lled by the ï¬rst new Public Health Nurse when. we may obtain. It is of considerable concern to the people within the Health Unit that the drastically small staff of Public Health Nur- ses be increased from the present number of three full-time ï¬eld nurses to at least seven full-time ï¬eld nurses at the earliest oppor- tunity. At the present time, each nurse is extending her work and efforts over an area of consxder- able. size and population and thus she is not able to give as com- plete aaservice to the people as is desired. The demands for her services is increasing and it is hoped that the demand wiu_be met as soon as possible. Communicable Disease (The following is a report covering the activities of the York County Health Unit, of which the village of Richmond Hill and the townships of Markham and Vaughan are mem- bers, for the month of December. It has been submitted by Dr. Robert M. King, Director. A statement covering the activities for the unit for the half-year in which it has been in existence will be submitted in the near future. EDITOR) According to outside reports, measles is occurring in epidemic proportions, both in Hamilton and in Toronto, and it is expected that we will have a great many cases of measles within the York Counâ€" ty Health Unit during the next two to three months} During the month of December, a consider- able number of cases were report- ed to the Health Unit by physic- ians, teachers and parents. The re- porting of communicable diseases in general is improving greatly due apparently to an improved ap- preciation on the part of the rub- Iic that it is important for the health of the community as a whole that the Medical Officer of Health have knowledge of where, when and how communicable dis- eases are occurring. It is imposs- ible for any Health Department to take adequate steps to prevent illness if the Health Department does not know of existing cases of communicable diseases. ' With the beginning of 1951, each monthly report, will present the actual number of reported cas- es of communicable diseases. With the end of December 1950, complete plans for immunization of school children, preschool child- ren, and infants ’has been made. With the presentation of this re- port, the immunization prosram has actually been in operation for a. couple of weeks. All school- age' children, with their parents’ County Health Unit Work Reported On By Director DAVID McLEAN SELLS REAL ESTATE Wed., Thurs.-â€"Feb- 21, 22 Mon., Tues. â€" Féb. 19, 20 TWQ CONTINUOUS SHOWS NIGHTLY STARTING 7 1’.M. JoelMcCREA ° Wanda HENDRIX Fri., Sat. â€" Feb. 16, 17 smv GRKBLE DAN BAILEY 1:an WALD AURORA MICHAEL CURTIZ consent, are given an opportunity to be immunized against Diph- theria, Tetanus (Lockjavv) and Smallpox. If they have prev- iously been immunized, they are given an opportunity to have re- inforcing doses to maintain their protection against these diseases. At the same time throughout the Health Unit area, immuniza- tion is being offered to infants and preschool-age children from the ages of approximately six months up to school age. Parents are thus able to protect their young children at an early age, when protection .is most valuable, ag- ainst Diphtheria, Tetanus (Lock- jaw), Whooping Cough and Small- pox. The present immunization pro- gram represents a tremendous effort on the part of the staff of the Health Unit and the schedule has been tightly drawn up with the excellent co-operation of tea- chers and school authorities in order to make it possible to visit each school within the York Coun- ty Health Unit by the ï¬rst week of June, 1951. Food Sanitation During‘ the month of December 1950, inspections of restaurants, Iunch counters and other eating es- t'abishments took up a consis‘sr- able portion of the inspectors’ time. Throughout the Health Un- it, the inspectors made 128 Visits to various food-handling estab- lishments during December. There is no doubt that a great deal of work has to be done in Ol'ch' to improve the sanitation in most of the eating establishments in all Municipalities in the Health Unit. A large amount of this work is a matter of starting at scra’tch, to demonstrate to operators of res- taurants and lunch counters gener- al methods of maintaining clean and sanitary establishments. It is necessary in many cases for the operators to obtain certain new minimum equipment in order to do a reasonable job. Emphasis on restaurant sanitation will be plac- ed primarily on dish Washing, food and dish handling, food stor- age, and sanitary serving at .l'ood to the customer. While there is a great deal of improvement to be made in restaurants in this re- gard throughout the entire Health Unit, it is expected that full co- operation of the restaurants’ op- erators, who themselves desire to operate a healthy and clean est- ablishment, will begin to show noticeable improvements in the very near future. Routine inspections of milk pro- ducers’ farms have continued during December, and 43 visits to such farms were made during the month, with 58 samples of raw milk and 20 samples of pasteur- ized products being- examined at the Provincial Laboratories.
