The Legion’s Role At a meeting held in Ottawa on 26th February, 1951, attended by representatives of the Canadian Legion, the St. John Ambulance, the Bay Scouts Association and the Civil Defence Co-ordinator, the Canadian Legion agreed to under- take the following role with 1cs-‘ pect to planning and operation of civil defence programmes: (a) Represéntaâ€"tion on provincial and municipal advisory councils. (vb) Provide personnel for control centres. Ex-Service Staff Officers could be used to .great advantage as controllers and deputies. (c) Provide wireless instructors and operators. (d)_ Ex-Service personnel. who have undergone intelligence train- ing would be valuable in the inâ€" telligence sub-section of Headquar- ters Section. (e) Warden â€" men or women se- lected because of leadership and ability, and not apt to become emO- tionally disturbed. War service will count. (f) Rescue section, hard, work and dangerous -â€" ex-servicemen have necessary qualiï¬cations. (g) Engineer section -â€" handling of heavy types of engineering e- quipment â€" salvage work â€" de- contamination â€"â€" collection and burial of the dead. (h) Ambulance section â€"- role much the same as the ambulances attached to ï¬eld dressing. station. Ex R.C.A.S.C. ambulance dnvers as well as ex-medical people. (3') Auxiliary police and ï¬re ser- vices. 2. The above represents activit- ies for which the Canadian Legion is well equipped in most commun- ities.
