Hill 4.30 DAYS Tel. 11 The Langstafi Ratepayers AS- sciation for residents in the Mark- ham section held ts final rgular meeting last week until September. The president, Mr. Mel Roy, in- troduced Mr. Jackson Taylor W'ho gave a very interesting account 0f the recent activities and future plans of the School Area Board. He reported that 23 teachers are hand- ling the 753 pupils, which figure is expected to be about 1000 in Sep- tember. He mentioned that con- struction of the Charles Hewitt School on the Scott sub-division is in progress but that difficulty was being experienced in obtaining a sufficient water supply. He said that at Langsjafl’ School the plans included some repairs to brick work and some painting. The libraries and sports equipment are to be re- stocked also‘ and he concluded by expressing the opinion that the three groups, Home and School, the Board and Ratepayers ASSOciations should meet together and co-oper- ate. Eollowing a question period, a vote of thanks was extended to Mr. Jackson Taylor. Ratepayers Association Bell Telephone representatives, Mr. Haines and Mr. Vernon were in attendance to explain the new plan for the changeover» of Thornhill ex- change to dial service next year. As this was considerably difi‘erent from the set-up as presented by Haines to the association last fall, there were many questions asked. The ratepayers were under the impression that the recent 4in- crease in rates was to provide a fund to take care of an improved service which would include free Toronto calls and the city tele- phone rate. Motions were passed requesting the Bell Telephone rep possibility of cheaper service to Toronto rather than free service to Maple and Richmond Hill and also the possibilty of increasing the time limit to Toronto from 3 to 5 minutes, the purpose of the two motions being to have eithér the rates reduced or the time limit extended. Regarding the matter of a gar- bage collection area, Mr. Roy brou- ght a report from the recent meet- ing of the Joint Executive that they would like Markham Council to give a dollar and cents per household cost rather than quote on an assessment basis. Mr. Roy also gave a report on a. visit of the members of the Executive to a previous night Council meeting. The West Langstaff Ratepayers Association will hold its final reg- ular meeting of this season in the Langstafl’ Public School next Mon~ day evening, June 25, starting at 8 o’clock. It was previously decided not to hold regular meetings during the months of July and August and it is hoped therefore that there will be a good attendance. As there was not a quorum on May 28, the meeting was not con- vened and therefore no business could be attended to. Until a con- stitution is adopted, the association has no legal status and cannot ac- cept the funds offered by the for- mer Garden Avenue Property Own- ers Association.
