Black-looking skies and threatâ€" ening showers which fortunately did not materialize made prospects look not too bright at starting time of Mark-vaun W.I.'s first money-raising venture on Satur- day afternoon. Later when the sun came out, so did the customers and about 75' grown-ups, plus their children, enjoyed a pleasant after- noon in the lovely garden of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Mathews. As pres- ident, the latter opened the ‘sale with a few welcoming words and home baking, aprons, orangeade, etc., began to disappear from the booths. Patrons included ladies from the branches at Thornhill. Richmond Hill, and Mrs. R. Var- ney of Noble-boro Branch at. Maine, U.SA. Rev. S. A. R. The chairs were loaned by Thornhill Anglican Church and Mark-vaun members very much appreciate the efforts of all those who helped in any way to support their first effort to raise funds which will be used in the community. Mr_s. M. Holt, treasurer, will give the exact sum netted at the next regular meeting of Markâ€"vaun Wo- men's Institute. This is to be held at the home of the vice-president, Mrs. C. Thirgood, Fairview Ave, on Thursday, July 5. The roll call will reveal some embarrassing moment suffered by the members and ought to be good for some laughs. Mrs. R. MacArthur, Cit- izenship and Education convenor, is in charge of the programme and the refreshment hostesses are Mrs. R. Ellison, Mrs. R.‘ Hamblyn‘ and Mrs. R. MacArthur. Members are reminded to bring their quilt squares. STAN. V. WORSDALE Telephone Thomhill 257:12 Recreation Committee Langstaff Recreation Committee met on June 14 and again on the 215i; and are now making the final arrangements for their first ven- ture, 3. Wrestling Night in Rich- mond Hill Arena on «Friday, July 6. “Red” Garner, 3 member of the committee, has arranged for all the wrestlers to appear wwh- out any charge whatever, because like many more he'wants to see the start made on a community hall that will provide pleasure for young and old. The opportunities to see pro-l fessionnl wrestling locally have‘ not been numerous and the mat- ohes arranged for Friday of next‘ week should be all the more ln- teresting because Richmond Hill's Billy Clubine, Richvale’s Norm AI~ exander and our own Cleve Bur- ton and “Red” Garner are taking part. If we show our appreciation to them Ind to the gentlemen who will be coming from other parts: Pnul Penchofi‘, Scarboro, Ed Man- goticlh of Ryding; also Waldo Von Sieber and Bobby Jordan, there is the possibility of another such af- fair in the fall. l Please see the advertisement elsewhere in this issue for details of programme and prices. Miss Mary Maddocks who is at- tending the American Airlines Stewardess Training School in Chi- cago is now nearing the end of the “rugged” course which normally takes five weeks of concentrated effort but has been condensed for her group to three.- Some bad weather on the flight to Chicago, made the trip bumpy in spots. Mary writes home that the dormitories it the school are really attractive and accommodate six girls, her own room-mates be‘ ing from Mississippi, Texas and Tennessee. “No visitors 'are all.â€" owed in the building and we're really looked after. You also take turns on week-ends being 1 "house mother”, etc., answering the .tele. phone and taking messages as well as the sign ‘in’ and ‘out’ sheet.” As the girls have to make 85% average on most subjects for a pass, it is interesting to note how she is doing, learned that on her first pnpers she made 100 and 94. with 98% everage on one subject. 0n routes end codes they have to make 95 percent “or else." Besides courses in such widely different subjects a: meteorology and salesâ€" manship. make-up and hair styles are studied and “H” day is hair- cutting day. There is a full size replica of the inside of‘ a D06 in the classroom which hi the turn ‘of g switch is made to react as it does in real flight. Considerable training takes place in this, in- cluding the serving of meals. In spite of the heavy, schedule, there is some time for pleasure which includes I. big dinner! at the Congress Hotel. Recreation Committee . The Langstxff Recreational Com- mittee met recently at the home of S. Worsdnle,,E. Breenan, E. Gar- net and H. Lee attending. The Langstaff Ratepayers Association was represented by the president, M. Roy. Mr. . Morris reported that Vau- ghan Township Recreational Com- mittee had met on June 5 and had been advised that an amount of $800 from the Provincial Treas- ury was available for the area and would be split evenly among Rioh- vale, MapleyThornhill and Lang- stafl’. To receive its share“, each committee must present plans oh how it intends to use its $200. ‘ The Langstaif Committee decid- ed to ask Langstaff Junior «W.I. and Mark-vaun W.I. to co-operate on the community hall project and Mrs. S. Worsdale, acting as see- retary in the absence of Mrs. J. W. Blackburn who was ill, was in- structed to write to them. It was decided to allocate $100 of the provincial grant to the hall fund and to use the remainder partly towards the Wednesday Night Boys Club run by “Red” Garner in Mr. W. McDonald’s garage on Fairview Avenue, and partly to- wards expenses of the committee’s first money raising effort. If the necessary arrangements can be made, the committee hopes to run a Wrestling Nigiht early in July, and another in October. “Red” .Garner would provide the combat- 1ants and the entire proceeds would go towards recreation. Mr. Roy was requested to ‘obtain three members of his association to serve on the’committee.
