For thousands of years, plain thorn, bone, woodland ivory pins were used to fasten clothes to- gether. It wasn't until 6,000 B.C. that man discovered metal, and some fashion conscious woman dis- covered that pins could be worn for decoration as well as for more practical reasons. Brooches and pins some with rare and costly jewel settings, remained the only clothes fasteners until the Middle Ages. (The phrase “Pin Money†originated because husbands gave their wives an allowance to purâ€" chase this luxury item). Buttons seem to be more popular than ever this year. According to Singer sewing centre experts, wo- men who sew are choosing a wide variety of buttons for trimming, because buttons are still one of the easiest ways of adding a dis- tinctive and decorative touch to a home-sewn garment. And the Lat- est word from Paris is that de- signers are using buttons on ev- erything‘: hats, shoes and gloves as well as on dresses, and suits. “Do Not Pick the Flowers" is a common sign in Canada’s parks. But in Ireland they read more subtly, “Let it be said of these flowers that they died with their roots on." Finally, sometime in the 14th Century, a German goldsmith dis- covered that cloth, jewels and other materials could be mounted on but- tons, and we have them till this day. One button-custom that has en- dured through the years is that of putting buttons on men’s sleeves. It is said that Frederick the Great originated' this when he had but- tons sewn on his soldiers' jackets to cure their distressing habit of using their slee'es as handker- chiefs. 1948 FORD HALF TON PANEL R.D. Henry the Eighth’s betrothal present to the ill-fated Anne of Cleves was a set of “great buttons of diamonds, rubies and Oriental pearlsâ€.
