Consult Not since “Home In Indiana," her ï¬rst ï¬lm, has the “Pocket- sized Venus" been gal‘bed in mod- ern clothes. “I’ve worn costumes so long on the screen, I'm begin- ning to feel like an antique," says June, who is slightly dated at the beginning of the ï¬lm, but comes right up to date in the 1939 to 1945 era of the William Perlberg pro- duction. In "I’ll Get By,†her thirteenth musical with color by Technicolor, June plays a blonde, beautiful singer, described as a “soft, warm, girl.†Co-starred with William Lundigan, Gloria De Haven, Dennis Day, and Harry James, June does a sister act with Gloria. For the Midnite Show only Sun- day, October 7, at 12.05 there will be a side-splitting comedy of ac- tion and laughs in Technicolor, starring Donald O’Connor and Hel- ena Carter. “I'LL GET BY" June Haver goes modern in Twentieth Centuryâ€"Fox’s Techni- color musical “I’ll Get By,†showâ€" ing at the Richmond Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6. The songs June sings in the ï¬lm are modern standards. including the title tune “I'll Get By.†Says June: “It’s a nice change from the ‘nostalgic’ turn-of-the-century dit- ties I’ve been doing." Research done by Twentieth Century-Fox for “Broken Arrow,†which will be featured at the Rich- mond on Monday and Tuesday, 0c- tober 8 and 9 discloses some fas- cinating side-lights on the histor- ical friendship between the ï¬erce Apache chief, Cochise, and a cour- ageous white man, Tom Jeffords. Though shortly after the Civil War the apaches and Whites were involved in a bloody struggle, these two men on opposite sides of the fence, refused to let the hostilities break the bonds of mutual respect and fondness they felt for each other. Based on this historical fact, the Technicolored “Broken Arrow" shows how Jeffords (played by Jimmy Stewart) had the courage and vision to 'bring peace to Ari- zona by daring to come alone to Cochise’s stronghold, though for seven long years no white man had come within the great chief’s arm and escaped without being cruelly tortured to death. Disgusted with the lack of gow ernment protection, he quit his post and turned to prospecting in the mountains. Yet this too was dan- gerous with Cochise on the war- path. Seemingly without the fears of ordinary men, Jeffords made up his mind to have a face to face talk with the warrior leader. The bold frontiersman said later, “This was the commencement at my friendship with Cochise, and al- though I was frequently compelled to guide troops against him and his band, it never interfered with our friendship. _He respected me and I respected him.†Dana Andrews and Susan Hay- ward, as the wartime lovers of “My Foolish Heart†showing at the Richmond, Wednesday and Thurs- day, October 10 and 11, enact Sam- uel Goldwyn’s ï¬rst realistic modern drama since his memorable “The Best Years of Our Lives.†Mark Robson, whose screen reputation has grown with “Champion†and “Home of the Brave,†has directed this story of an ill-fated romance from a screenplay by Julius and Philip Epstein. Supporting the two stars in featured roles are Kent Smith, Lois Wheeler, Robert Keith and Jessie Royce Landis â€" all from the Broadway Stage â€" and 8-year-old screen veteran Gigi Per- reau. Like “The Best Years,†the idea for which Producer Goldwyn got from an article in Time,“ My Fool- ish Heart†originated in a. maga- zine. A 1948 New Yorker short story, “Uncle Wiggin in Connec- ticut,†by J. D. Salinger, struck the Epstein twins as a good basis for a play. They took an option on the story, but were persuaded by Mr. Goldwyn to turn it into a screen- play for him. Salinger’s title, which might suggest a comedy, was changed to ‘My Foolish Heart1 to ï¬t the dramatic plot built around the story’s leading character, a young matron who drinks to escape the: failure of her war marriage. Actually. Jeï¬â€˜ords sought out Go- chise (played by Jeff Chandler), not to talk peace but to protect his own personal safety. Formerly sup- erintendent of the mails, fourteen of his men had been killed by the Apaches and he, himself had been wounded by their arrOWs. There was good reason to res- pect Cochise. Not only was the Apache a great warrior, but his cause was just. Always a. peace- ful Indian, he had turned to war only after a young 'Army Lieuten- ant hung three of his cloae rela‘ tives for I crime they never com- mitted. But, though peaceful all his life, when Cochise took the wupath he did it with a. passion and ability that was phenomenal. Angrin proclaiming that ten white would die for every Apache killed, he made his vow good.
