Bird The decline of a. shipbuilding dynosty and the economic turmoil that accompanied the changeover from sail to, steam in 19th century Nova Scotia are traced here by Mr. Bird, the down-east chronicler. “So Much to Record” is the story of John Winstill, the person- al tragedy that lay’ in his sudden blinding and the larger drama 'that saw the little Maritime ports desolated as shipyards closed, and the people bewildered in the face 3M technological change. Drawing on his broad knowledge of his native province and his scholarly historical data, Mr. Bird spins his story expertly. Certain weaknesses in motivation are the less apparent because suspense is maintained throughout. Even when action lags, as it does occasionally â€" and one is tempted to ask here why Mr. Bird is impelled to note the passing of season after season â€"â€" the cumu- lative power of the novel is enough to hold the reader. The story itself is not new with the author nor wholly new to his followers who remember “The Dory Builder,” one of the short stories in the “Sunrise :for Peter” collection. John Wintell becomes Jon Winstill, but his problems and the background rgmain the same. His wife was Molly in the story. In the novel, Molly figures again, but this time only as his first, fur- ious affair. His Wife this time is Judy, an appealing woman who comes out of the slum of Purple Rocks, a settlement of ne’er-do- wells near John’s town of Carrs- boro (a ringer for the real Cum- berland County Town of Parrs- boro.) - is the last'to hold the proud name of Winstill on the Nova Scotia coast. The proud name of Winstill is overdone. Sympathy of the reader for the main character is risked and the action slowed by John’s priggish concern for the family name and the lettering-in of the ancestral story. The side charac- ters, however, are almost always helpful to the story. The tomboy- ish She-Willie, the kindly Roxanna, the dipsomaniac Sally are clearly imagined and the figures of the village doctor, grbcer and baker, In a moment of panic traceable t\o her Purple Rocks environment Judy leaves John, leaves him to bring up her daughter, Elaine. whose paternity is in doubt. Judy returns to John's later years and 0F 34 HEAD 0}“ MILK COWS, BABY BEEF, HEIFERS, STEERS CALVES AND GRAIN LOT 17 & 18, CON. 4 KING TWP 2'/; miles north of King" City FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9 The property of WM. About Books CLOSED FOR THE SEASON THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE General Contractors AUCTION SALE SO MUCH TO RECORD at could have been taken out of any old Nova Scotian town. By J. D. Salinger There is no doubt of the striking power of Mr. Salinger’s book. From the first page to the last it is in- tensely readable in spite of the fact that it has practically no plot. So far, the reader’s path is made simple. His problem is to decipher the book’s inner meaning and in‘ tention.‘ Perhaps the author intends sim- ply to produce a lifelike and con- vincing portrait of a. neurotic youth of seventeen. If so, he sue- ceeds triumphantly. This account, in the boy’s own words, of his thoughts and actions during the three days when he hides in New York, a truant to both school and home gives a complete and horrify- ing picture of what arich boy from an apparently cultured family can make of himself. Holden Caulfield, as the story opens, has just received notice of expulsion from yet another of the many schools he has attended. Al- though English is his best subpect, his stream of thought, like his con- versation, is a steady flow of un- grammatical profanity. His idea of amusement is limited to prosti- tutes, night clubs and getting him- self served with drinks though a minor. He attends movies and plays, but under protest. I do not think that in the course of the story he ever opens a book. Not surprisingly, he is painfully bored and contemptuous of all his amuse- ments. But rather oddly he feels not only dislike but; superiority to nearly all the people he meets. What makes the reader vaguely uneasy is the“ feeling that possibly he is meant to sympathise with this unappealing young neurotic, who, at seventeen, appears to have no unselfish thought in his head, 1h some ways the book recalls those English novels shortly after the First World War which attack- ed the English Public Schools. There are sketches of some of the evils which probably affect sporad- ically any boarding school system. But whereas in the English novels the hero generally suffered from his intellectual superiority to the hearty athletic tradition, young- Holden’s superioriy was apparent- ly not intellectual. Quite the most charming charac- ter in the book is his little sister. Phoebe, who bluntly asks him if there is anything he likes. At the end of the book, we are still won- dering.
