The branch members have been planning and working on these quilts for the past year, the win- ning entries will be on exhibition in various fall fairs, some sold, others as in former competitions will be sent to Dennan College. W. I. institution in England. Bethesda brancthast York dis- trict was the winner in the district, but lost out in the finals. Maple leaves were the favoritr theme in the quilt patterns whici‘ had to be original designs for com- peting branches. Other designs were the trillium. Ontario's flower, and pink and green English roses. Manitoulin districts had three win- ning entries, one a green map of the island one the emblem, the orchid and another the Shamrock- rose-thistle pattern. One branch quilted an Institute meeting scene bordered with brown teapots, an- other Canadian scene complete wltli Peace Tower Mounties had representatives in costumes of var- ious nationalities. The Women's Institute of Ontar- in Quilt Competition was sponsored by the Salada Tea Company who provided the prizes. District win- ning first prize was South-Taren- tors Algoma for a design of color- ful maple leaves fenced by leaf- green bars against intricately quil- ted white background; second prize went to Villa Nova W.I. of Norfolk North which also carried the maple leaf theme, and third prize was won by Aylmer W.I. of Elgin East in shades of yellow and green that told the story of tea from picking to teapot. Top winners were chosen from entries sent in from 109 W. I. disâ€" tricts, and will compete with win- ners from the provinces in the Nat- ional competition being held thi: winter for the Lady Tweedsmulr Cup. Exhibiting at the Markham Fair, October 2, 3, 4 in class 39 for East York Women's Institutes, spe- cial class will be Mark-Vaun W.I. The branch will be competing with' other branches for the first prize of $25 for a baby's layette. Exhibit- ing in section 2 are Mrs. W. Black- burn and Mrs. R. McArthur. Con- vener for the layette is Mrs. Ellison and her committee, Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Glassey, Mrs. Hamblyn, Mrs. Reid. The regular October 2 meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. D. Robeson, Boyle Dr. The program will be Citizenship and Education, and convenor Mrs. H. J. Glassey. The speaker will be Dr. S G. Chalk. Medical superintendent, Langstfiff Ontario Hospital. There seems to be quite a lot f building going on in Langstaff ‘ rea. Louis Robillard. whose .iome was destroyed by fire in the spring, has his story and a half new home almost finished. Mr. George, of No. 7 east ,who also had his home destroyed by fire a few years ago has almost com- pleted his new home. Township of Markham The land runs from Yonge St. to Bayview and plans are for an industrial area at the ONE. tracks which run through ‘the property. On Bayview one to two and a half acre lots are plan- ned for residential purposes. Al- bert Munroe of North Toronto, is the foreman on the job and Frank Harrison'of Th'omhill is drilling for water. George Davies, general mana- ger informs us his company will “.150 be erecting homes on Mark- 1am Rd., at Richmond Hill in the tear future. Thorn-Heights Park, located at Stop 18B Yonge St,, is‘ now a hive of activity. Construction has commenced on five ranch style bungalows, of which the base- ments are finished, and two of the houses sold. The contest for magazine sales between Thornhill Public School and Langstafl? is now over. The Maclean Hunter Publishing Co.'is presenting a prize to the~pupi1 with the highest points. Carol Shep- pard grade 8 pupil at Langstafi, sold the highest number of orders for the girls, while Allan Harrison, also of grade 8, was highest for the boys. Approximagely $60 was ear-' ned by the Langstaff students for the school. The money will be used in financing the television set. Langstafi’s Newest Subdivision birthday October 1. Mrs. O. L. Word has been received from Joe Dunleavy and Kenneth Leus- chner, who piloted two trucks to the Western oil fields, that they arrived safely and are now both working on an oil rig. Mr. and Mrs. East haye another son, born on Saturday last. Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Johnson were visitors on Sunday at Gwen's home here. October 7, when we will have as our guest, Mr. George Dalby, sup- erintendent of grounds for York Memorial Cemetery. He is a gra- duate of Niagara College of Horti- culture and will speak on “Land-, scaping the Small Lot." With man- y new homes being built in this vicinity, this should prove inter- esting. Mr. Dalby will show mov- ies relative to his work. The evening service was under the direction of Rev. Jack Kell of 'Dhistletown. who exqressed his de- light at being back after nearly 30 years. The choir of Wesley Church. Vandorf, rendered very lovely selections. Altogzther it was a day to be remembered for a long time, filled as it was with many poignant memories. We had the pleasure at the morning ser- vice of meeting our minister's dau- ghter, visiting her parents here from the West. Ingthe evening. Mr. Huston ex- changed pulpits with Mr Kell. Headford Home & Schoo‘l The flowers were gorgeous. but then they always are at Headford, and the minister, Dr. Lavell Smith of the Church of All Nations. seemed so much to enjoy being back in the Church where he spent part of his student minister days. The choir supplied the music for the morning service. under the able direction of Mrs. Stewart Rumble. What is it about a Church Anniversary that arouses such a a feeling of nostalgia? There must have been plenty of it last Sunday at Headfox'd Church. for there were very many people, who formerly worshipped there back in the neighbourhood for a visit and to attend one or both of the services. Most homes had some visitors: at the Lees‘ Mr. and Mrs. Len Bagg had supper and came for the evening service. Visiting at the Leeks were Elmer's father and mother. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Leek of Gormley.
