Seek assistance early. Remember that if you wait until the child is 15 years of age, that he has taken 15 years to develop into this kind of child, and his behaviour and personality groblems are pretty well set." In is concluding remarks Mr. Shaw said that in Quebec the names for homes for these children were re- named “Protective Homes" to re- move the stigma from the child. There is no psychiatric centre for disturbed children in Ontario at present or no type of home where they can be placed under the right kind of controlled super- vision. “We are hoping." Mr. Shaw said, “that there will be such a centre in the new hospital that is to be built in Toronto. “Adolescents need a great deal of sympathetic understanding. This is a period when the child is experimenting with being an ad- ult. Too rigid a parent will not allow the child enough leeway. and with too lax a parent the child doesn’t receive the' support he needs. Clothes, to an adolescent. as to an adult. establish his status in the group and are important to his feeling of adequacy among his contemporaries." Mr. Shaw ex- piained. who hesitated to admit that they had tuberculosis in the family, for instance. There is a need for pro- tective workshops for these cases and with help at an early age they might be able to make a certain adjustment to certain controlled situations.
