' LET -"mi56ï¬ An out-ofâ€"towner at last week’s doubleheader of the Richmond Hill Basketball League made the comment that this league showed that the village had some real community spirit when they could form a group in which everybody got a chance to play. The Teachers and Rhillers came out on top in the opener but the close scores indicate that the teams are evenly matched. The brand of ball was keen if not scientiï¬c but the ï¬rst game of the season never produces much in the way of good timing. The Rockets appear to have youth on their side while the Ramblers have the experience. The Rhill- on are perhaps better organized and the Teachers . . . . well come out any Wednesday night and see for yourself. First game 8:15. The High School this year is entering three teams in bas- ketball competition. The North York grouping will have Aur- ora. Newmarket. Alliston. Richmond Hill, Pickering College, and St. Andrew's College. Alliston has joined the Southern District Basketball for the ï¬rst time so I guess they like our company . A . . no wonder! . . . . they didn’t lose a game during the football season St. Andrew’s and Pickering are now officially members of the league on a year's trial basis. These two private schools applied for admission at the annual meeting and ran into some stiff opposition from the schools in the north who argued that the high schools were at a disad- vantage because the boarding schools had better facilities and more time with the boys. The coaches of this area were all in favour of the schools entering. Sure they have good teams! . . . . that’s what we want. Good competition improves the quality of the athletes and win or lose the main aim of team games is not to win but to develop a team spirit of co-operatlon, leadership and good health. Therefore we are glad to wel- come our new entries and are looking forward to an enjoyable 8685011. u... ~â€"~_-_,‘., ...-- _-.=.- _-_,e-, _, hive of activity as coaches, players and officials from the many schools of the Georgian Bay District of C.0.S.S.A. descend upon us for the annual Basketball Referees’ Clinic. The pro- ceedings start rolling at 9:30 and continue throughout the day. Three officials from Toronto will be on hand to demonstrate the various rules of the game using players of this area as the guinea pigs. Rule books will be issued, a motion picture shown. floor tests and written tests performed and even a full course meal will be served in the school’s cafeteria. This basketball clinic should sharpen up some of the more exper- ienced officials and also bring to light some good prospects who wish to enter this noble pastime. The players in attend- ance will gain a clearer understanding why the man in the striped shirt blows his whistle when he does. Well, the local football season is over and here is how the High School ended up. The Senior Six-man ï¬nished in sec- ond place in the North York League with Stouï¬â€˜ville being the winner. The Junior C.O.S.S.A. team ï¬nished in second with Alliston on top. There was quite an upset when Aurora de- feated Alliston Seniors in the Georgian Bay South League. The Wonder Five. consisting of the teaching staff of Richmond Hill District High School came onto the floor, looking better this year than any other year. As usual Thomasson and Ellis led with their fancy plays and mar- vellous teamwork. A new tea- cher, Mr. Lanspeary showed won- derful handling of the ball and was excellent throughout the game. The referees, Bob Miner and Bruce Munro, students of the high school, were very good and made their decisions with con- ï¬dence. - ‘ Rhillers Start Show The ï¬rst quarter commenced with the Rhillers starting very slowly, scoring two points. Lak scored after going down the floor, eluding the opposing players nicely and depositing the pill in the basket with a lay-up shot. Hawkins drew a foul shot but failed to score. The teachers starâ€" ted to roll and lost little time in taking the lead and keeping it. Stevens, a towering 6’6" centre for the Teachers was a standout of the game scoring 31 points. Babcock and Lanspeary played well and Thomasson was a stone wall on guard. For the Ramblers. Teetzel and Steï¬an carried most of the scoring punch while Keï¬er and Dodds played steady defen- sive ball. Bruce Smith, a new- comer in these parts played well for the losers, and probably will improve when he gets acquaint- ed. Stevenson had difficulty but it’s been a little while since Mur- ray roared up and down the floor. In the curtain raiser. the Rhill- ers defeated the Rockets 50-41, and the Teachers galloped to 49- 34 win over the Ramblers in the night cap of the twin bill. Rhillers Lead The Rhillers. a smooth operat- ing machine had little trouble in defeating the Rockets as they led most of the way. The Rock- ets tied the score early in the fourth quarter, only to have the Rhillers go ahead for good. For the Rhillers. the ï¬rst string play- ed their usual fast. smooth brand of ball. but the entire team play- ed well. Bill Ellis has a ï¬ne club this year, and they will be some- thing to watch, after a few more practices.
