Hill School Board Trustee James Pollard has been elected Chairman of the Richmond Hill Public School Board for his eighth straight term. Mr. Pollard the senior member of the present board was honoured with the Chairmanship at last Thursday’s inaugural meeting of the 1955 Board of Trustees. This will mark Chair- man Pollard's 18th year of serv- ice on the local Board of Eduâ€" cation. Committee appointments for the coming yehr are as follows: Finance. Trustees S. Tinker and Mrs. M. Southwell. Building. Trustees J. Pollard, R. Ross. D. Mills. and C. Mabley. Person- nel, Trustees S. Tinker and Mrs. M. Southwell. Repairs and Main- tenance. Trustees J. Pollard and C. Mabley. In a new departure this year the members have sei. up a pur- chasing committee to direct and control all purchases of school supplies. It is expected that the Board will set aside space in one of the new schools for storage purposes. Members of this com- mittee are Trustees R. Ross and D. Mills. 1954 rmancial Statement A completed financial stateâ€" ment tabled during the meeting shows that the Board finished its 1954 operations with a balance of $1.655‘33. Major expenditures during the past 12 months included. sal- aries, $73329; School plant operâ€" ation. $11,373. School plant maintenance. $1,156. Transpor- tation, $9,171. Administration, $2,952. The members are investigat- ing an accident insurance plan for the students which costs 50 cents for $100 coverage. Under the plan the student pays 25 cents of the yearly premium and the Board pays the remaining 25 cents. In ‘1954 the Board paid out $153 in medical expens- es for children hurt while at school. 4:33;, Truant Officer The members have doubled the annual salary of Truant Officer Bert Mabley. By unanimous conâ€" sent the Trustees have granted Mr. Mabley $300 annually. Mr‘. Mabley's previous salary was $150 annually. This will mark the first salary raise he has re- ceived in the past six years. DON DEACON Mr. Don Deacon who repres- ents the ratepayers of Ward 2 on Markham Township Council. A member of a family prominâ€" ent in agricultural and investâ€" ment circles this year will mark his initial entry into local poli- tics. He resides on the Deacon Farms just north of Unionville. Councillor Deacon has been selected to serve on the Finance and Assessment, Fire and Police Committees in the coming year. Creek. PICKERING’: Township Coun- cil plans to use unemployed per- sons in the township in a drive to clean up the Rouge River, ‘ettficoat Creek and, Duffin’s The following members of Vaughan Township Council will act as chairmen of the various municipal departd ments for the year 1955: Roads. Set Committees For Vaughan MEN’S 8: BOYS’ WEAR Family Awakened As Auto Crashes Into Elgin Mills House Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Anderson of Elgin Mills thought they were in the middle of an earthquake at 2:20 a.m. last Sunday. when a car driven by Donald Blake. 25. of Holland Landing, skidded off the west laneway of Highway 11 and ended up practically in their kitchen. Blake who had fallen asleep at the wheel of his car. escaped with only minor cuts and bruises, after skidding across Harry Pridâ€" ham's driveway, dodging a post and several trees. He awoke as the car completely sheared off the Anderson's verandah and smashed right into the kitchen wall, moving the two-story house back six inches from its found- Sympathy This community joins the fam- ily and associates of the late Francis Alexander Legge in mourning his passing. Services at St. John's The lst Jefferson Cubs and Brownies turned out in good strength for the church parade held at St. John's Anglican Church last Sunday morning. The Rev. D. C_ H. Michell. chaplain for the lst Jefferson Group, delivered a most inspirâ€" ing message to his youthful list- eners and told them that if they acted as a sea captain under ‘secr’et orders’ does; they would put their lives completely under the command of Jesus and trust Him to lead them safely along the way of life. This Sunday, January 23rd at 11:15 am. Sta John’s will observe Theological Sunday, with the children of the Sunday School taking part in the service. President Lends His Voice 4 Carson Whalen, president and popular ‘callex" of the Jefferson School Community Club, did his bit to aid the National Ballet Company. by acting as a caller at the Square Dance Jamboree, held in Mutual Arena last Monâ€" day night. The purpose of the jamboree was to raise funds for the Ballet Company’s coming tour. 46th Wedding Anniversary Cele- brated Sixteen members of the Rob- ertson family gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. (Hal) Robertson last Sunday. for a buffet supper in honour of Mr. and Mrs. J. Edgar Robertson. Toronto. who observed their 46th Wedding anniversary on Saturday, January 15. 1955. Among those present were their two sons and two daughters 5nd six grandchildren. one grandson, Arthur E. Robertson of Whitby was unable to attend 0n hand to tender their affect- ionate good wishes for continued happiness to Mr. and Mrs. Rob- ertson were: Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Beatty, Mr. Wm. Harper and Mr. Florence attend- ed the Aberdeen Angus dinner held at the Royal Hotel, Guelph, last Friday afternoon. They were a- sleep in an upstairs bedroom at the time. A watch was put on the house until 5:30 that morning as it was thought that the collision might cause the collapse of the whole structure. Insurance investigators told Mr. and Mrs. Anderson that only one room of the house was hab- itable. Both Mr. Kerwin and Stanley Leno have a good knowledge of building supply needs. _7 There was some discussion about dogs running at large in the school grounds and the board decided that Mrs. Mary Terry should get in touch with the owners of the dogs and ask for their coâ€"operation before taking further steps. The board also decided to ob- tain the services of a supply teacher for one day, to relieve Miss Audrey Leary, principal, so that Miss Leary could supervise the junior and intermediate rooms. Personal Notes Mickey Pick's friends were sorry to hear he suffered a brok- en ankle on Monday of last week and will be in a cast for five or six weeks. Mrs. Dickson Miller is progres- sing favourably but it will be some time yet before she can get out and around without as- sistance_ Miss Ronnie Beatty of Dry- noch Farms has returned to school in Montreal after spend- ing the holiday season with her family. Social Evening Ladies, remember to keep Wednesday evening, January 26 open for a social gathering at the home of Mrs. Ross Kerwin. This is the first monthly meet- ing in the new year for the la- dies of the Jefferson School com- munity Club and a good attend- ance is anticipated. At a recent meeting council passed a byâ€"law to raise by loan the sum of $35,000 for the pro- posed new twoâ€"room addition to the Jéfierson Public School. An- other by-law authorized the bor- rowing of $4,000 for finishing the addition to the Concord Public SchooL $2.97 Pair A special meeting of the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s Separate Schools was held on Tuesday night, Jan- uary 11. in the School to el- ect officers for the coming year.
