'- n r,“ 1---“-.1.‘ MERCANTILE HOCKEY MINOR HOCKEY Richmond Hill and District Minor Hockey Associa- tion continues to expand and grow into a compact lea- gue with good response from sponsors. Up to last week six teams had formed the league. Since then two more sponsors have come forward to furnish sweaters and stockings for the team. Inside of a year the league has doubled in strength. They now operate on an eight team schedule. Last year they had a four team schedule. ynuJ v1. u. On Saturday afternoon 4 to 6 pm. George has made it possible for boys to register at the Richmond Hill Ar- ena. The closing date for registrations is November 29. Don Thurston and Laurie Rose, coach of the midget team, will combine to sponsor a team to be known as the Richvale Canadian Legion. ‘VluA‘VAIA‘ Anau ..\l v Richmond Hill Mercantile League players have had several practices in the past few weeks, in preparation for the league opening. Dave Brownlee, Gord Tonne_r, Stan Ransom, Tom Porter and Dalt Hicks are digging In to organize teams for the coming season. The league will need more players to operate a four team league this year. Players wishing to get on a team can contact Dave Brownlee at Richmond Hill Arena on Tuesday nights. Practices start at 8 p.m. RICHMOND HILL LIONS HOCKEY A final period goal by Doug Smith gave Richmond Hill Lions a 7-6 victory over Rexdale Lions at the local arena on Wednesday, November 6. Doug Smith was star of the game, scoring four goals for the winners. This is the second win for Richmond Hill. Several new players have been added to the local Lions team this season. Paul Blinkley, Dave McCann, Shaun Beggs, Al Awrey and Andy Thompson give them a much stronger team. Rexdale Lions have also added several new faces. Wally Cox, who played pro hockey in Quebec, is a strong addition to the Rexdale team. JUVENILE HOCKEY . Thornhill Juveniles after several practices at the Woodbridge Arena, have started signing players for this year. Ev. Toby, President of Thornhill Hockey Club is signing the boys up. Coach Clarence Greenfield has been busy making arrangements to have the team play a few exhibition games before the opening of the North York Minor Hockey League schedule. All members of committee and team players will be kept busy selling draw tickets for the-Thornhill Hockey Club. The lucky winner will have a real smart boat and trailer to hook on to his car. " MIDGET TEAM Laurie Rose, Coach of the Richmond Hill Midget Team was nominated Vice-President of the North York Minor Hockey League. at a meeting in Newmarket on November 5. Laurie has several years experience in coaching. He handled the North York Juvenile “A” team for four years, which won Juvenile “A” honours In 1951-52. SOCCER Several players from Richmond Hill Police Soccer Team‘with players from Barrie were selected to play as an all star team against the Hungarian Champion- ship Bantam Team. . The game was played at Fred Hamilton Stadium on November 10, with the Hungarian champs coming out on top 4-2. Denis Richardson of Richmond Hill scored in the last half of play. The All Stars could not overcome the commanding lead of the Hungarian boys. Outstand- ‘ing players for the All Stars were Pete Capel, Mike Dy- on, Bryan Finnity, with Andy Di-Vincenza. Al Cooper of Richmond Hill and Ron Pickett of Barrie combined to coach the All Stars. This game wound up a very successful season of Soccer for boys of the Richmond Hill Police Team. Next year there will be three teams playing organized soccer in a Toronto league. They will be the young cherubs, bantams, and the older juvenile team. RUGBY Thornhill's classy junior rugby team, under the coaching of Bill McVicar, is a vastly improved team over last year. They will meet.05hawa Central for Cen- tral Ontario Secondary Schools Association Champion- ship this coming Saturday on Thornhill high school grounds. The game will commence at ‘2 pm. Richmond Hill won the championship last year. BASKETBALL The basketball season gets under way at Richmond Hill High School on Friday, November 15. Richmond Hill's senior team will play Aurora Grads in an exhibi- tion game. Game time 8.30 pm. To date the Thornhiii team has an unparallelled unbeat- en record this season with eight games won and none lost. During this year they have scored 210 points ag- against opposing teams and have had anly 29 pts. scored against them. Stoney has only recently won the title from Carl Schrier and many thought he would take a rest from the strain of Title mat- ches. Stoney says, "Any middle- weight who thinks he can lift the belt from me can have a crack at it. I’ve‘ never backed up in my life and I won’t start now." The Italian wrestler was overâ€" joyed to hear that Stoney accept- ed the match and promises the fans that he will go all out to try to lift the belt from the rugged Scot. The aficiandos will all be pulling for Orlando to come out on top. but Stoney seems to be doing very well lately both here and out of town and this writer will go out on a limb and pick Brooks to retain his laurels,'but anything can happen. League took over Vellore Community Hall on Sat- urday. November 2. Eighty girls. ranging in age from 10 to 14 at- tended the luncheon in their honour. Honour Junior Girls At Banquet A number of the girls will be playing senior ball this coming year. Executives representing teams in the league were on hand to praise the girls for their efforts throughout the season. In the past four years of organ- ized softball a great deal of in- terest has developed in the girls’ teams. Vellore Women’s Institute did all the catering for the event. Former Deputy-Reeve Albert Rutherford presented the trophy he donated to the Richvale Jun- ior Girls Team, who racked up a string of victories throughout the season, losing only one game and going on to win the cham- pionship. Mrs. J. Warwick of Hills- view Drive, attended the Cat Show held at the Mont- real Armories on Sunday. N0vember 3, where three of her prize-winning “Blue” cats added further ribbons to their collection. Champion ‘Blues’ Win Ribbons In the Specialty Show. Roddy of Bunesk won first prize: He also won Best Blue Male in the All-Breed show; Best in the Solid Colour div- ision and was judged the Best Long-Haired Male: also capturing “Winners” to be- come a champion. Kitten Class: Warwick’s Commander was first in the Kitten Class of the Special- ty Show; Best Long-Haired Kitten: Best Blue Kitten and Best Kitten in the show. In the All-Breed Show, War- wick‘s Commander won Best Opposite Kitten; Best Blue Kitten and Best in the Solid Colour division.
